I personally pay for the lowest rate on my first night and I am almost always upgraded. They hate to make you move rooms, if they can avoid it, so most will let you stay in the upgraded room (provided they give you an upgrade). I booked a Crowne Plaza recently and had to use points first and they upgraded me to a view of a brick wall, the next day I called the front desk and asked if my paying room would be a better view and they accommodated me. But EVERY TIME, but once, when I booked the paid night first, I have been well looked after with an upgraded that lasted through the points nights. Good luck - Please let us know if it works for you please. I find on this site a lot of times, people get the information, but never get back to us to let us know if our information, was indeed useful. Have a great trip.

@jbuzzas
Just remember that Hilton also gives top tier status to at least some of their credit card holders - granted I'm sure it's a smaller number since it requires $40k in yearly spending but there were worries on the frequent flier forums about Diamond status being greatly dilluted as a result. That said, I've now had Hhonors Diamond status for several years and the benefits have only increased. At this point I'm not going to get too worried about the dillution of my PC Platinum status, I'll wait to see if there's a noticable decrease in benefits.

I was recognized as AMB at the CP Hotel de Mexico in DF a few months ago and upgraded to a suite.
