Temperatures are going to be in the mid- 90's all week here in Atlanta (seems way too early). I feel sorry for pets who are miserable and helpless in this heat. I just read that in addition to heat stroke, dogs and cats can actually get sunburned...never knew.
It's actually not a bad idea to keep an eye on the tops of your pet's ears, lips, and nose and applying sunscreen isn't as crazy as it sounds. According to Novartis Animal Health, there below are a few other things you can do to help keep your pet safe in the heat:
- Protect your fair-haired pet. Just like people with pale white skin, dogs and cats with lighter-colored fur are at greater risk for getting sunburned.
- Keep your pet in the shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
- Get your pet to a veterinarian if he starts looking like a tomato.
