Do you bring your own toiletries when traveling?

Sure, those little bottles of shampoo, conditioner and mouthwash are there for you to use.  But, why not bring your own and reduce the use of plastic? Besides, most people enjoy using their own products. Do you bring your own toiletries when traveling?

Why don't the hotels provide larger bottles? Some of the ICs do it. So it would be great if the other hotels do join in. It is very difficult to bring your own toiletries when traveling with only a carry on. Most of us business travelers do so. So we would appreciate if IHG keeps providing us with the toiletries that we need. Once TSA lifts the restrictions I'm more than happy to bring my toiletries with me.

I tend to use the shower gel and shampoo from time to time as I then use the empty bottle as a refillable container for my own products. Some years ago my wash bag was like a house brick, now I have a carry on Samsonite bag, I use the small clear wash bag that came with it. Have to say tho...I do tend to get a dry scalp with the HI shampoo, form time to time!

No i do not bring my own when traveling for a number of reasons

I need every little weight saving that I can have in my luggage, I am usually exactly 23kg.

A lot of these items can not be in hand luggage for security reasons.

I regard the luxury of the up market toiletries as part of the experience of the leisure break in an Hotel.

1. I  like the lotions, soaps, shampoos supplied by the hotel.  but rarely  take the extras homes.  My fave is the sewing kit with pre-threaded needles and will always take these home. .

2. I usually do not check luggage, so I bring minimum  amounts  of toiletries, in little bottles to adhere to the 3oz rule.

3. Sometimes I   buy toiletries  at the destination  . i.e hairspray, contact lens solution, sunscreen. and other items that don't pack well in 3 oz containers .

4. I check out the website,  minimus.biz, which only sells  tiny travel items.

5. When purchasing  cosmetics in a department store, I always ask for samples of moisturizer, eye creme, etc. and use these for travel.

Todd,

Not sure why this is a blog topic, instead of a discussion thread???

Anyways, yes they are there for use; but it doesn't mean people use them. For certain items, save them for the next guest..

Of course, I/we bring toiletries when traveling. Obviously, you don't have tampons, face wash, etc..

Offering recycling bins that we have mentioned in other discussion threads, and those mini plastic bottles can be recycled.

bringing my own is always better as i really dont like the quality offered at most of the hotels, specially tooth brushes as well as paste and shampoo is not according to the standard i normally use plus going to the store specially after a long flight is totally pout of question. It would be a suggestion to keep better standard toiletries at the hotels, I remember having molton brown at crowne plaze once which is one of the best i believe.

Interesting question!

I used to bring my own items, not any more.  It is just easier to use what they provide.  I find the hotels provide adequate amounts and have never encountered a problem. Most have a stock at the front desk of a variety of things we may forget to pack and that is always appreciated.

I have a small amount of items in my carry-on Ziploc bag, which are actually items from hotels that I did not use completely (or it's my own product refilled in the plastic bottles). I have this because when I stay at HIX, I do not like any of the items they provide, and sometimes I may need more of what is provided, or something may not be provided. I have stayed at HIs that were out of coffee before (I do not pack this though). I do appreciate that hotels provide the toiletries, and I usually pack with the mind set that most of what I need will be in my hotel room.

I bring my own toiletries because I don't always spend all of my travelling in hotels that provide them (e.g. if I spend a night or two at a homestay instead).

Also, I don't always agree* with the ingredients in some of the hotel supplies.

*(meaning, either the soap dries out my skin, or it's made from animal fat, whilst I use vegetable based soaps).

However, I do like having the choice/backup and I do like to use them when I agree with them, especially if they have a nice smell. Like others, I use the empty bottles for future travels.

Doesn't mean that makes me ecologically sound though as it could be that the extra weight of flying my own things is more than what the hotel would achieve by sourcing it's toiletries locally and in bulk.

Like nesma, I usually carry most of my own toiletries because I am allergic to many ingredients.  Most of the people I know that travel use the hotel toiletries for the shorter stays even if they are not fond of them.
