Executive and club lounges

Posted by Ronald Chadwick on Oct 15, 2009 11:12:09 AM

It seems they are becoming more popular and wide spread. We have them in Hotels, Airports, Up market Car dealers and rail stations. However what do we get and are they worthwhile.  At airports you can gain access to lounges through Priority Pass if not travelling in premium class seats.

http://www.prioritypass.com/

This can be bought and has access to some 350 lounges at most Airports worldwide. We have pours through Amex Platinum card as complimentary. It does not matter in what class of air travel you are travelling, just check the location prior to departure and present your card. The lounges are often shared with business class airline passengers so are very pleasant places to wait in comfort.

We have Crowne Plazas with Lounges entry seems to be for club rooms that you can, if lucky be upgraded to. The one lounge we have experience of is the Crowne Plaza at London Gatwick Airport. It is not that large but had a friendly and helpful staff. Entry was by room key card. We had an early Breakfast there and it was with a reasonable choice of the continental variety. There were beers and soft drinks available.

The intercontinental Lounges are a different matter. We have experienced about half a dozen and entry is, if you have not booked a club room, by luck of the draw. One year as an Ambassador in the IC Aphrodite Hills Cyprus we were invited to use the lounge, and very excellent it was to, the second year as a Royal Ambassador on the same room deal we were denied entry.

Now we paid for the Lounge in the following ICs: - Malta, Vienna, and Budapest in the last 12 months and the experience was well worth the extra cost. In Malta the lounge had a grand terrace with far reaching views. There were some interesting books on the shelves and plenty of comfortable sofas. The food for the complimentary Breakfast was ample with a reasonable choice of both hot and cold dishes. The evening snacks were adequate and if as we had had a larger lunch.

Both Vienna and Budapest had very excellent lounges with very good breakfast selections and a small lunch buffet. The Evening selections were again very good. Malta and Vienna had spirits on offer in the early Evenings but Budapest limited this to fine wines. In all these lounges the reception staff are as well versed in local knowledge as the concierge desk and will arrange things for you as well. This is were you register as a guest and settle your account.

So it is a case of evaluating the perceived benefits against the extra costs. We are due in the London IC this week end but I baulk at the extra cost here as it is said to be £80 ($130) I will ask for a viewing of it to get an impression of what is available.

.I stayed at the London  IC  in July, and had a special rate for  use of the lounge.  It is very attractive, with a grand view, but  the bottom line is the bottom line and you have to assess if  the additional cost is worth it..

Breakfast is wonderful; a full menu, served by the wait staff, as well as a buffet table with the usual cheeses, meats, fish, etc.. The orange juice was fresh, and the cappaccino (sp.?) very good.

There is afternoon tea, though  I was never there for it.

At Cocktail time, there  are complimentary  drinks and substantial hor deurves..

There are a couple of computers for guest's use.

Do the arithmetic and you will se if the extra cost is worth it to you and your wife.

I hope this helps.

I can't remember if there was a dessert  later that.night

Dear Ronald,

Your blog comments above convinced me to reserve rooms with Club Lounge access for an upcoming trip where I'll be staying at the local InterContinental Hotel for the first time.  Three years ago, I rarely considered Club Lounge access, but I consider it for most trips today.  Your comments positively affected my decision and will be considered for other future stays.

Thanks for sharing your experience.  This is the kind of information that draws me to this on-line forum.

We were upgraded to the Presidential suite in Malta and got lounge access with this.  As Ronald said above, it was excellent.  Champagne, spirits, wines and beer from 18 to 19.30 as well as snacks.  Tea coffee and soft drinks all day, afternoon tea and cakes served from 15.30.  We were then downgraded to a standard room for the rest of the stay, but we paid €50 per night for access to the lounge.

Is it worth upgrading?  In our view, yes.  When you consider that breakfast at the IC in Malta was €21 per person, you are already at €42.  Throw in the cost of evening drinks, internet access and soft drinks during the day, it was a no brainer.

We did not this time take advantage of this discounted RA rate for the club but will in the future, thanks for the tip

Why were you down graded, Are you an Ambassador?

Nov 1, 2009 2:48 AM kevintiobraid kevintiobraid    says in response to Ronald Chadwick:

No, we had booked the 5 day stay in two blocks.  The first two days I paid for myself, so got the upgrade on these nights.  The next 3 days were booked with the "Stay two nights get one free" offer earlier this year, so we were bumped down to standard rooms for these nights.  Tried our best to stay in the suite but to no avail...

I think I understand that you are not Ambassador, I do not think Ambassadors get downgraded on multiple bookings.I have booked a paid room followed by reward nights and been upgraded per Ambassador and Ra and stayed put for the duration.

Your'e right, Ron. It is an Ambassador perk

Like you, I often pay for the first night with $$ and the rest with points.  I have never been downgraded or asked to change rooms.

generally, I am treated with respect and given a fine room, sometimes a suite, sometimes a view, sometimes, I don't know if I am really upgraded, but never, never have I been downgraded and asked to move.
