Well, I'm using my free nights and staying in the Crowne Plaza Time Square, the week before Christmas. I've been to NY in Oct, Nov and Jan, but never in the build up to Christmas. I'm travelling with my wife and 14 year old son.
I'm sure some of you will have a few must see or do tips....look forward to your reply.
Many thanks
Scott

Scott,
Your wife and son will love at least passing by the Rockerfeller Center Christmas Tree! This year, it will remain lit from December 2, 2009 until January 7, 2010. It also is a good choice because you can stop by at anytime as it is lit from 5:30am-11:30pm with 30,000+ lights. Music & Performances happen between 7-9pm. For up to date information, call (212) 632-3975. This year the tree is from Connecticut.
Nearby, the Rockefeller Center Ice Skating rink is also an option. There is also another skating rink in Bryant Park. You will only be a third of a mile away from Rockefeller Center, since you are staying in the Crowne Plaza Manhattan Times Square! The hotel has a "happy holidays" page, but it's not much help.
I love riding around & seeing Christmas lights in the neighborhoods. Dyker Heights, a neighborhood of homes in Brooklyn, will exceed any expectations.Check out some the pictures posted on online.
The major department stores display their holiday window displays at this time if you think your son would be interested. If you are, visit my fellow blogger, Isabel, who touches on a few shopping options in New York City. One more thing, your son will definitely enjoy taking a trip to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) to see the Museum's Origami 15 ft. Christmas tree. The Polar ice skating rink is on the premises.
Enjoy your NY week,
Many thanks to both of you for your advice...The photo has given me the "I can't wait to go feeling..rush the days away."
Guess I should post a few photos of my trip, on my return to the UK.

Scott,
Fodors.com has a current blog featuring tips for traveling with your teenager. I wans't able to download it to this site. Go there, you may find it helpful.
Hi Vanessa,
I've not seen a Fodors publication in years, we used a pocket NYC guide back in 1996, when we had a few night in NYC at the end of our honeymoon. It was first class, good eating and sightseeing guide. We also used Fodors guidebooks for a few years with trips to Florida and Disney.
I'll check fodors.com when back home tomorrow. Stuck in Newcastle, UK at the moment, collecting Points in the HIX.
Many thanks
Scott
****** Daughter who is in Durham Uni reckons That Newcastle is great for night life. Not been there for 35 years so no comment.
I've been censored so will try to get round this, My religious addopted for *****
Yes, Newcastle is a good night. I have 2 more nights planned for Dec, entertaining clients. Don't recommend the HIX Newcastle Metro Centre, bumped into smoking room!! Little help from reception, even after flashing the Platinum card.
Hi Scott, did you email in advance and ask for a non smoking.
Great post Amanada!
It surely does make one want to travel to NY for the pre-Christmas festivities.
Thank you for the information!
I agree with all that has been said, but am adding the following:
Rockefeller Center area: - two blocks from the Crowne Plaza, Times Square
Stop into St Patrick's Cathedral, across the street from Rockefeller Center. It is gorgeous, especially at Christmas. Saks is right there and usually has good holiday windows. All the department store windows are fun to look at, Lord and Taylor and Saks are usually traditional, Barneys (Madison and 61st) sometimes gets politcical or just plain funny. One year they showed gifts that each of the Sex and the City might receive. .. Let yourr imagination run wild and you will figure out some of the gifts. .
Rockefeller Center skating is more expensive than Bryant Park or Central Park, but has the most holiday excitiement. And there will be a Santa (sometimes with sled) skating along side of you. The restaurants dfacing the skating rink need reservations and you might have a hard time getting a table near the window.
Teenagers also like the NBC tour, touristy, but isn't that what you are.
Pass by at night to see the tree. It is magical. Walking along 5th Ave is also wonderful at night. Notice the Cartier building; It's lights go all the way to the top, replicating a gift box, complete with bow. Everything else is lit up, too. . Notice the star hanging in the air at 5th and 57 and the Channuka (sp) menorah , adding a light for 8 days. Look south to the Empire state building ( 5th and 34th) which has lights, appropriate for holidays, so it will be red and green shining on top.
Shopping
Bloomingdales and Macy's offer discounts (11% ?) to out of towners. Go to the Visitors Center for the pass, which is good for the day. If you return, you need to get another pass.
Museums
Teenagers like the Museum of Natural History, and the Plantarium next door to it (Central Park West and 79th). Two minutes away is the NY Historical Society, a small easy to navigate, museum featuring a " Lincoln in New York exhibit. You can have a nice lunch around the corner at Isabellas on Columbus Ave.
Pick up a copy of Time Out or New York Magazine which will give you a good rundown of what's what and where, during the week you are in town. The Times is especially good on Friday. If you have specific interests, let me know. I might be able to make suggestions.. But the city is so wonderful around Christmas. You will walk everywhere and have a grand time. And let me be the first to say, "Merry Christmas" It will be. You 'll see. .
Time to do some planning - if only I could extend my trip.
Many thanks for all the trip tips.

Anybody in New York for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day? (Besides my dear Marlene) : )
Amanda Kehoe
Amanda, Good question. Is anyone from this forum in NYC for Christmas?
Despite the snow, now piled up against the curbs, and looking dirty, the city is gorgeous. Lights are bright, the top of the Empire State Building is red and green and Fifth Avenue is aglow with the holiday windows and the big star hanging in mid-air at 59th Street. Rock Center with the tree and the ice skaters is picture postcard perfect.
Department stores had everything on sale and were busy all month. , but the really high end designer shops on Madison Ave seemed empty. I guess Armani sutis are not selling big time this year, nor those $800 stiletto heeled shoes at Jimmy Choo..Prado always has sales, Furla, too, Chanel, never. .
Marlene,
That's for sure! Chanel and Louis (never have sales). Occasionally, my usual Chanel associate from Saks, calls and puts a few purses aside for me to come and check out. Saks Atlanta has a small Chanel Handbag Boutique. The Prada handbag boutique inside Saks also had a few items from the Cruise collection on sale. Of course, the 'sales' are not that great. Chanel purses went through 2 price increases last year alone. It's amazing to see some of my classic bags, almost double in price. Crazy!
Oh, went to Bloomingdale's Christmas Eve, and they were having 40% off a few mens items. I bought a couple of Cashmere sweaters, and a wool jacket that was originally $595 for only $300. Mike loved them! For me, I bought four pairs of new Cole Haan women's shoes. They are super cute, and on sale (which makes them even cuter)!
After Christmas, I'll make my rounds to Pottery Barn to get the 'Guilt' style frames. And, stock up on more LED Christmas Lights for next year.
Merry Christmas!!!
Cole Haans are my favorites, especially the boots..
That classic Chanel bag goes with everythin , but I wish mine was a little bigger. I had heard that they went up in price, and will check the next time I'm in Bloomies or Saks to see the current price.
We are so far off the topic, I'm suprised no one is complaining.
Happy New Year, dear Amanda, .
Scott,
How did the Ny trip turn out?
Hi,
The trip to NYC was great. We had an experience that we plan to repeat Dec 2010. It rained on the Sunday, but Monday and Tuesday the weather was clear and not so cold. We did the Empire State Building at night, along with the must do night walk to see the lights and windows on 5th & Rockefeller Center. Not being a Sex in the City fan I fell for the request to visit Perry Street & Greenwich Village, but have to say that was a fantastic break from the busy Midtown areas.
Apart from a little shopping we had a comfortable stay at the CP Time Square and enjoyed visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, NY Public Library and St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Sunday evening we met with family who live out on Staten Island, they took us to a restaurant called Ben Brown's Steakhouse, 123 W 52nd Street. The food was just perfect, I would highly recommend this place to any meat lover. We decided to take breakfast in Ellen's Stardust Diner, 1650 Broadway, corner of 51st Street, what a breakfast experience....more talent here than any TV find a star show.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who posted tips and what to do ideas on PCC, they were very helpful.
Hi Scott,
I'm so glad the NYC trip was all you hoped it would be and that you are plannng to come back.
Manhattan is really many neighborhoods, some residential , some not. . The Met Museum area of Fifth Ave is posh (Jackie Kennedy O. live across the street rom it). The Villoage, Perry St is a different kind of nf neighborhood. You can spend a lifetime visitng all the attractions in every neighborhood. Celevreities live everywhere and , sometimes you spot them on the street.
Correction" The steak restaurant you recommend is Ben Benson, not Ben Browns. It is excellent. Other notable steak houses are Peter Lugars (in Williamsburg, Brooklyn), Del Friscos, Strip House, BLT Prime and BLT Steak,
Next fall, remind me that you are coming to NY again. I mght have some insider tips and suggestions.
Happy New Year.
Your correct it is Ben Benson.....I've made a note of your recommendations, I appreciate it. It's so much better when your armed with a list of good restaurants.
Happy New Year to you too.
Scott
