Since you're all very avid travelers, I assume you enjoy taking photos of the most beautiful places here on earth! As "Black Friday" (also known to me as "crazy shopping day") approaches here in the United States, I've been contemplating on buying a new digital SLR camera, preferably the Nikon D3000 for my future travels. But before I make any major purchasing decisions, I'd really like to hear your reviews of cameras you are currently using for your trips!
Any guidance is appreciated.
Thanks,
Claire

that's a very nice camera you are considering to buy.. right now, i am using a SONY W150 for taking my photos.. it's a really nice camera.. it has clear shots of images even while moving.. i am planning on buying a new one but i also like to have a SONY SLR camera.. i can only recommend to you SONY products since it's the brand i trust the most not only for cameras but for everything that they have to offer.. that's why all my gadgets and appliances are SONY brands.. ![]()
I used to own a Sony digital camera and used it a lot when I was traveling in Europe, but then one day I lost it! It is a fantastic camera.
that's sad to know that you lost your camera.. it's really a fantastic camera.. it's user friendly and it's the best for me..
I gave up several years ago to bring a camera with me while traveling. If I have to take some pictures I use the camera option on my cell phone. But I rather take on the moments in while at the location. When I was younger I always had a camera with me and even used different lenses to capture some nice pictures. So of I would have a camera with me nowadays it probably would be the one you mentioned or similar. Probably also would have a small digital camera with me for snap shots
Claire,
As an avid Nikon SLR user, the D3000 would be a great option. Remember to get the package with both lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm). Costco sells the package currently for $699. Which SLR camera do you currently own?
Amanda
Thanks Amanda for the advice! I actually don't own an SLR right now which is why I'm very eager to buy one. What model do you use now? Would love to see some of your photos ![]()

Hi Claire
I have the highest praise for Canon. My Canon Ixus, which takes very good pictures, developed a fault after 4 1/2 years of use. The LCD display went blank rendering the camera unusable. Expecting to have to pay for a new display, I was very surprised to find that the repair was done completely free of charge because it was a known type of fault. They didnt even charge for postage! How about that for service.
Cheers
Dave
Dave,
I love great customer service!! Thanks for your input. Canon is also on my list. ![]()

I bought the Canon T1I a few months back. No regrets, shots amazing photos and takes video in hd so thats a plus. I think it just matters on personal choice. I didnt like the feel of the Nikon and the Canon was comfortable for me.
The one thing I recomend is if you chose to buy any additional lenses save for the image stabilizing lenses, maybe even invest in a monpod or tripod. My brother has a Nikon with a few lenses, the one without i.s. had blurry backgrounds and limited what would have been amazing shots.
I'm definitely investing in a tripod for taking night photos! Thanks for the recommendations!
The Nikon 3000 you are interested in would be perfect for you because it is a beginner SLR. In my opinion, Nikon's are much more user friendly. I have a more professional Nikon with several different lenses so it would not be ideal for a beginner. I still hope you will consider a Nikon if only for the user-friendly features!

I had the horrible experience of losing my camera on a flight back from Rome (IC Rome). I lost all my vacation pics as well. ![]()
Two weeks in Europe and no photos to show for it. Anyway after a year we replaced it with a Panasonic which was nice but I dropped in a bucket of melted ice while hanging out poolside at the IC Montelucia (photos lost again). Now I have a T1i which I bought for my last trip to Paris (IC Le Grand of course). It has been great so far.
too bad you've lost two cameras.. and (picture) souvernirs....
Oh no! Perhaps it's a good excuse to visit Rome again in the future ![]()
It looks like the T1 is getting a few mentions here! Thanks for the input nub2travel.
AHH but did you know that Panasonic will replace/repair damaged cameras for minimal amounts of cash?
My camera was great until I dropped it on a concrete floor with the lens open. I called to find out what the closest/next/newest camera model would be to the one I dropped.
They told me 89$ and they'd either fix it or replace it for me.. What a deal!
I bought a new one anyway, never used the service.
While the Nikon is a good camera, I prefer something smaller. There are many powerful smal digital cameras available. My favorite is and has always been the Panasonic with the Leica lens. Excellent quality pix, lightweight and all around ease of use.
Take a look at the one below.. Costco has it for $279.00 and they have the previous version for $199.00.

Update on price of this camera... Costco has it now for $220
My choice of camera would be dependant of safety as well as the kit itself. There are, unfortunately , places where an expensive camera may attract envy and subsequent theft. So I use almost routinely a medium sized Camera that does not have a big name exposed on it.
Claire,
What did you end up buyin?
Amanda
Amanda, sadly nothing yet! When it comes to big purchases, I tend to take my time in deciding what's best
I'll let you all know though! I'm really leaning towards a Nikon SLR. Unsure of what model yet.
Check out this website for reviews:

Lots of info there.
I am sure that in the USA you have price comparison sites as we do in the UK. I have found that the buyers reviews can be quite useful on them.
