I take nothing.
I was taking home the unused soap, shampoo, lotion, slippers, and plastic dry cleaning bags.
No more!! I have too many hotel bottles of stuff. at home.
So, what I don't use there, stays there.
What's stashed in your suitcase? Be honest and if necessary , anonymous. Tell us; no one's listening.
Nada, I just don't have the space in my case for those things.
My wife's friend has a decaf coffee stash from her husband's travels. So when someone needs decaf-she pulls out a 4 cup bag and makes it from the saved hotel coffee packets. Truth is, sometimes it is good coffee and sometimes it is not so why not just buy your own? I don't get the whole idea of taking those things.
Hi Marlene,
My wife in her previous life was a Global Sales Director and brought home lots and lots of the cosmetics (shampoo, conditioners, etc) from her travels, she also persuaded all her male colleagues to get these things for her as well
Then, when a sufficient amount was obtained, she put them into packs and took them to the local maternity hospital for the women to use there, so I have continued to do this and we send regular pack sinto the hospital as a little 'feel-good' factor
The product is there to be used, and so in a way we are!
Have fun
Mike
Great idea, Mike.
I like the idea of taking home the shampoos, cremes and lotions, to donate to a worthy cause. I'm gonna' do that, too.
we do that too but you have to watch as some charities don't like some stuff - but homeless shelters will take anything
hand creams and sewing kits are great for office desks or toolboxes
or drop off those little bottles of shampoo or soap at a nursing home or hospital they think they are great
I take home the Chocolate drink packets (unopened) and sometimes the soap (unopened) if it's nice, all for my wife of course ...Sorry ![]()
An alternative drop off for those items if you choose to take them, would be a homeless shelter.
Thanks Marlene for an interestinng conversation topic! This reminds me of the "Friends" episode when Ross takes shampoo, soap, and even a light bulb from the hotel room. Funny stuff.
As I am late riser and prefer a later breakfast, when stopping at a Holiday Inn Express I have a cup of tea, toast with butter and jam. The cereals that are on offer, fresh fruit, breads and pastries I take for later.
From a Holiday Inn and stopping in an Executive room I always take the small bottles of shampoo, bubble bath and other things except for the Sewing Kits. I've more than an ample supply of those.
I was once chatting to a manager in an Hotel regarding promotional items like Soap/ Matches/ Stationary etc. That's exacly what the consumable items were regarded as. However they were amazed when on occasion of renovating a bedroom to find on removal of the bed that a 72 inch by 72inch about 2mtre sq.part of the carpet was not there as it had been removed..
Similar to Mike, I collect the soaps etc and given them to a friend to collections them for elderly ladies.....which I think is cool, keep a couple of bottles in my wash bag for emergencies as at times housekeeping standards for replenishing is variable......still haven't worked out how to take the 30" plasma telly yet though ![]()
the only things I take home with me is what I bring with me from home.
I take the soaps/lotions/shampoos too. But instead of the shelter, I send them overseas for our local Project Soldier program. It's not much...but every little surprise can make someone's day.
I take the soaps. lotions and shampoos. I figure that is what they are there for, for guest to have and use and is included in the room rate. I have combined all of my lotions into one decorative lotion dispenser I have at home. I generally get around to using most of the items, but have bundled up some for charitable gift boxes. I have also sold some at yard sales. I also take any snack goodies, ie mints on your pillow, candy or microwave popcorn that is intended for guest use.
I have a very unique use for the shower caps. I once got a pedicure where they dipped your foot in wax to soften dry skin. I don't want to repeat this at home because of the mess and hassle so when I pamper my feet I will slather them with a good lotion or cream. It takes awhile for the lotion to absorb and I do not want to put on my shoes or slippers so I use the shower caps as a slipper for my feet for about a half an hour. Not every hotel gives shower caps so I don't get a lot of them, if anybody wants to send me theirs, I'll be glad to use them.
I usually take the shampoo from Holiday Inns in Hong Kong & China as it smells pretty good. Then I fill the empty bottles with aftershave and shaving gel which fit nicely into my washbag, provide enough for a weeks' travel and cut down on the weight of my bags
The little burgundy bottles of toiletries from IC's - specifically those in IC Toronto Centre. I wish I could buy HUGE bottles of the shower gel, as it's lovely... Macademia something or other! Watch out Housekeeping when you have those on your trolley.
Ironically, at my place of work, everyone writes with an IHG branded pen... don't know where they all come from ;-0
The other bit of "sleight of hand" I will own up to, is that when I stay in any UK located IHG property, I pack my holdall with spare sachets of Hot Chocolate from the rooms to use at a later date - as the rest of the world don't seem to have got the idea that people like a milky drink before bedtime (or is it just me!) I tried to start a campaign on a former IHG group site like this for Hot Chocolate and Cookies... all of the regular ICs I stay at make sure we get a jug of milk and cookies before bedtime. Terribly British isn't it ;-)
Fair Cop!
As long as you leave the bed bugs you will be fine... the germs wash off!
I forgot; sometimes the stationary if it looks classy. And post cards.
How many of us have discovered a Hotel pen in our possession after check out?
![]()
Fairly often. The IC pens are quite nice.
Stayed in a Crowne Plaza at the weekend with my family and somehow (momentary fit of stupidity) forgot our toothbrushes. So on this particular occasion, we took home four travel toothbrushes - thanks Crowne Plaza for handing them over to my 12yo when she asked at Reception.
My favourite freebies though are in little business hotels in Japan, where among other things they have scrunchies for hair in little sealed bags - they all went home for my daughters :-)

For Leisure stays great memories and for business stays the satisfaction of achievement.
We seem to have two threads going on the same subject.
I was kidding about taking the flat screen TV on the other thread.![]()
In my local town A white van with two smart overalled men went in to the local HI with genuine looking papers saying that they where to take all the TV's for a minor test in the workshops and could they be have a pass key. Result 100 plus TV's stolen.
Ron, I llaughed out loud when I read your reply about the heist of 100 TV sets at the local Holiday Inn. Couldn't you imagine Peter Sellers starring in a movie built around that? Or Woody Allen? thanks for making my day
I too thought it funny, I guess the duty manager did not though. They were not recovered either.
Art another hotel I stayed at the security guy was taking a stroll outside the hotel at night. He was surprised to see a TV being lowered from a first floor room by the sheets being tied together.
Another Hotel had all the Drapes, curtains stolen by a so called cleaning company.
For those of you who like the lotions, Holiday Inn hotels in the US and Canada will be carrying the Bath & Body Works brand in the Coconut Lime Verbena scent. The Bath & Body Works line will have volumizing shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and vegetable-based soap (optional).
Geez, now my wife will be asking me to carry this stuff home!
Rick's Family,
At least you will have an extra good smelling wife : )
If you haven't already, make sure you check out my recent blog post as I mentioned you in the post.
Thanks,
I stayed in a Holiday Inn a few months ago that had these new Bath and Body Works Amenities - really enjoyed them!
I love the scent too! I just can't use them because I have such sensitive skin. Even the shampoo irritates my scalp. : (
Amanda
I also love the new bath & body works amenities! I'm sure the men aren't as fond of them...
Rather bring my own soap with me than using the soap bars supplied by HI, HIX. Always have a nice supply of soap bars from the ICs. The quality and smell is just better.
HIX in the UK give you soap dispensers secured to both the shower wall and beside the sink.
The Marriott in Lisbon has a hairbrush and a comb, both in very stylish packages in their bathrooms. I can't help but take these home with me. Unfortunately I am hair challenged and have no use for them, so why do I have to do it!
If their is a dental kit and/or a shaving kit, I find these useful for long-haul flights.
I have a book from a few years ago called "About the towels, we forgive you: Absorbing Tales of Borrowed Towels". It is an interesting book about the history of Holiday Inn, told through stories of people that had "borrowed" towels from Holiday Inns across the US.
While I don't take the towels, the soap, shampoo, conditioner often follows me from the hotel. I tend to leave behind the toothbrushes and razors, a I have found, that it my hands at least, the free hotel ones, are dangerous weapons.
I have untold numbers of hotel pens lurking in every corner of my house.
I used to collect the matchboxes, but gave this away over time. As hotels seem to be slowly converting to non-smoking hotels, the opportunities are diminishing.
Marky,
Sounds like an interesting book..I would love to read it.
Amanda
I have to confess I do tend to take away the freebies in the bathroom....some I use to save on case space on longer trips. However, I do have a cabinet at home with a few dozen bottles of shampoo. Oh, I have a large collection of HI pens that I do tend to use.
Like the dental and shaving pack..not often they turn up in the bathroom..are they a newbie?
I am always tempted by the IC shoe horns.
I tend to take the toilletrees and slippers where possible but leave the towels.
I do know someone who justifies taking a hand towel by leaving all of the other free stuff there though.
I believe that hand towels are not the right thing in any situation to take. The consumables are regarded as promotional items,
I agree with you and have said this to them but there's not a lot I can do about it when we get home and they tell me about it. I just make sure that if we're all going away together they have to book their room under their name.
It is not unkown to get a charge on credit cards for missing items from the room. As usually two room maids stock the room it is difficult to dispute
I don't doubt that fact. I've only booked a room for them once and fortunately I didn't get a charge applied but would have fully passed it on to the responsible party for stealing this item. But as I said previously I didn't see there was anything I could do at the time as they didn't tell me till we got back.
I like to think I'm a responsible guest for the most part in that I only take items that are obviously complimentary however I can't control other peoples actions and to be honest the person this happened with was someone who I thought would have been responsible enough for me not to have had to have a word about what is acceptable to take and what isn't.
I think your position is both clear and honourable
I do take the soap and shampoo and sometimes the mouthwash. Being in the military when we stop as some places you have to provide your own washing materials, so I use them then and I have less stuff to carry as I go to the next place. I work on C130J's & we hop across countries, continents and unique little places, it is nice to have memories of the hotels I have stayed at
I think every traveler is guilty of this, but i've taken home shampoo early when I first started. But I don't anymore only because I end up using the entire bottle when I travel now.
Jetsetters,
I don't think you need to feel guilty about taking home the little bottles of cremes, lotions and shampoos.. or even the packets of coffee.
I was told by one of the hotel managers that guests are expected to take the disposables if they don't use them while staying at the hotel.
Hovever, towels and washcloths disappear at a alarming rate, and that is considered stealing. When robes disappear, they bill the guest as a separate charge. on their credit card.
