At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

I have gained 160,000 PC points this year and since I have already secured platinum status for next year I am wondering if I should go with a different hotel chain. I also belong to 2 other loyalty programs but have only stayed at IHG properties this year so far. I noticed that several other brands have large suites and offer very nice "complimentary breakfasts and evening receptions" and I find that their beds are more comfortable. I have already made my reservation next week with this other chain for 4 nights and since this will be my final trip this year for business, i will add to my 19,000 points at this other chain. At what point do you make the decision to stay in a non-IHG hotel?

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

Since PC is the best frequent stayer program to earn points, I definitely try to stay as much as I can with hotels from the IHG group. The only times I choose to stay with other hotels is if the price is too high, there is no IHG hotel in the close vicinity or coworkers stay at another hotel. I don't stay too many nights at hotels to have the highest level with other hotels however maintain elite status with 3 other hotel chains.

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

I belong to every  hotel program and have status above the standard at four of them. I have platinum status with PC, gold with two others, and silver. I receive upgrades from IHG far more than I do with any of the other programs, so that's a factor for me when deciding where to stay. The two hotel groups I look at first are IHG and Hilton properties. If all other factors are the same, I will choose IHG; however, I usually choose my hotel based on other factors: location, date hotel was built and/or remodeled, bedding, type of room available, extra amenities, and more.

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

I belong to all the chains, but my first choice is always the IHG group, because  it is easier to

build points for  free nights and I like amenities of the ICs.

I go to another hotel and/or chain for better:

1. Location - no  IHG where I want to be

2. Price  -  comprable accomodations  in another hotel are less costly

3. Amenities -  offerred a suite, breakfast, etc. or some substantial amenity, that is not guarenteed with my Platinum Amb.

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

I stay at a non-IHG hotel:

If one is not available in area

If I want to stay at a more luxury hotel

If I am in a place that has a special hotel (eco, resorts, on a "best of" list, landmark, etc)

To compare other brands and hotels with IHG

If I have had quality issues with a franchise owner or group in an area

Respectfully,

I stay in non-IHG hotels when :

There is no IHG near my destination

The IHG is not ranked well or not well maintained

I am staying in a Resort

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

This is a particularly important question to me because I face it often.

Despite my preference to stay at an IHG hotel, I may consider another brand if local IHG hotels does not acheive:

  1. - very-good (minimum) overall condition of the hotel
  2. - my room choice availability (including my hotel brand preference)
  3. - value based on price, location, ease of access, amenities and even PCR promotion

Each of these elements are weighted differently when I'm traveling either alone, with my wife, or with professional colleagues.

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

Most of my stays in IHG properties are business related.

I regularly travel to nine of the top twenty most populated cities in the U. S.

The IHG properties have fair and compedative rates in those cities.

I also travel to cities of less than 50k popultion. The rates in some of those cities (towns) are

not as compeditive.

I can not in good concience bill my employer for a $130 room when a similar limited service chain has a room available for $90.

Having made the decision to use IHG we look at hotel locations and decide on our stays for leisure. We do have from when working a number of points on both Marriott and Hilton which I keep active for  an usual event.

I ALWAYS choose IHG, however, this is due to my getting discounts for working for an IHG property.  My girl calls me cheap, I say it's practical.

I always travel to larger areas though, so IHG is always an option.

I would say it is prudent not cheap as you can go to more and have better choices with your discount.

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

IHG hotels are my first choice.  However, the determining factors for me are:  location, price, amenities included (breakfast, in-room coffee), promotions offered.  If I am traveling with my cat, I obviously look first at the pet policy.  If we are traveling with other people, as on a golf vacation or for a family event, I usually stay in the same hotel or resort with other members of my party... the convenience offsets most other differences.  I might also choose a non-IHG hotel if I am close to a point redemption level on another chain and the stay would give me enough points to get me there.

I think you are wise to get some points with the other chain at this time of the year since you have maintained your status.  It is always good to experience the other brands and get another perspective of hotel life.  You may see some new ideas that you like.  Please pass them along to us if you do!!

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

I'm pretty loyal to IHG properties now. For one I like the biscuits and gravy breakfast at HIXpress and I like the point redemption aspect as compared to Marriott and Hilton.

I do venture out to Hilton brands for a few months each year for one reason only. Hilton, for about 2-3 months out of the year, gives triple Delta Medallian Qualification Miles for stays. So I can quickly rack up a lot of the MQMs during that period. It will be even more of an incentive now that Delta is allowing you to rollover miles above and beyond your status to count towards next years status. I usually hit about 100K Delta Miles a year, but that new Diamond level is at 125K, so the Hilton/Delta MQM promo is even more enticing. That's generally the only time I'll stay somewhere else.

I agree ~ I like it when Hilton gives the EQM bonuses. Hilton was my second hotel of choice after IHG. I'm not too happy about their recent points redemption increase tho...

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

I do play the point game with Holiday Inn, Marriott & Hilton.

I kind of figured that Hilton would go up, it is easier to earn points per dollar spent. (see below)

Altho since I have been on this site I have found a whole lot more Priority club Points

If I'm staying in a city I check where I want to be, then check the 3 chains.

Sometimes I have a short notice trip, so I keep them updated by date, & see

which is the best deal.

I going on a 7 day trip (7 hotels in 7 Days, ) in June 2010 (Hot Rod Power Tour 2010) & the group I'm with are staying at all HI's & HIE's

Most of my stays are at IHG hotels but thru work I will end up staying at Marriott or Hilton, so I get a few nights which I use too.  Seems like a waste if I don't & the points don't expire

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

There is one IHC property I can not return to and must stay at a competing brand on

my next vivit to thtat city.

At that property my Blackberry signal drops off to zero when I enter the hotel door.

Even when standing near a third floor window zip, zero, nada!

When I ask the desk clerk if I was the only guest reporting that proplem she said, "you

must have Verizon phone service". Seems there is an AT&T tower just 50 meters from

the front door that blocks all other cell phone service. No Verizon patron will stay there

twice even though it is a very nice property with an extremely efficient and friendly staff.

That would definitely be a deal breaker!  too bad, wonder if the hotel is aware what the impact is on their business.  I'm also a Verizon customer... what city is it in?

Not really a "city", just a small rural town in the middle of deep east Texas. Believe me, it is no place you will ever visit.

Re: At what point do you make the determination to stay in a non- IHG brand hotel?

Our company decided beginning of the year to switch everyone over to Verizon. Everyone got brand new phones, except me. I still used my provider since I just had moved and kept my own contract. Now we're changing back to ATT because there were to many problems with Verizon. Biggest problem was the inability to use the cell phones overseas. I guess coverage here in the US is about the same for all providers here in the US, Some have better coverage in certain areas but are bad in others.

We've probably digressed enough to be off-topic at this point.    In the area I travel and need a cell phone the most (rural northern plains states), Verizon has the best coverage and it's not really that great but for obvious reasons.  My hubby would love to get an iPhone but we can't afford both Verizon and AT&T... ouch!  For a trip to Italy, we just bought an international phone & short term contract from Brightroam.  That would not work for businesses, though.
