I am a Platinum member and so far have only used HI in the UK. From my experience, and reading the blogs of other members, room upgrades don't happen in the UK due to lack of availability i.e. others have paid more for an upgrade. Why cannot some other incentive be offered, for example a drink at the bar, or discount on food. Is this sort of promotion determined by individual hotel management or the group as a whole?
we have never had an upgrade when we asked we were informed that all rooms were taken we also feel that when you take a rewards night your breakfast should be included in hi as there seems to be no incentive in being a priority club member in the uk what do you think !!!! there also seems to be problems with points and you have to chase them up all the time ![]()
I've had a few upgrades using my Platinum card in the UK - had an executive suite (or similar) at Plymouth and Harrowgate! I do agree that a breakfast with Reward Nights would be splendid £10 or £15 each for a "standard" breakfast is OTT.

Upgrades are only available at certain hotels in my experience. I tend to stay at the same hotels repeatedly and find that particular ones will upgrade automatically without even asking. This works both ways of course in as much as those that refuse to upgrade will always refuse. Within the Intercontinental Group, I usually find Holiday Inn provides the best value for money (there are a few exceptions to this). I stay at the Plymouth HI and they always upgrade. The Washington Tyne and Wear on the other hand generally refuses. On the odd occasion my wife comes with me on business trips, it is extremely good value to have breakfast and dinner for two as it is for the same price as one. I have never found another hotel chain that offers this.
The upgrade debate is running on a number of threads
See my most recent blog for what you can expect and how best to get it.
My thoughts on this are well documented, and I sound like a broken record when this comes up.
Short answer is I think the program is wrong to "overuse" the 'subject to availability' clause, but thats managers discretion. Second point is - your right that a range of upgrades should be selectable.
Mr Chadwicks tips are worth reading thou.
Hi All,
Best one I've found for a Platinum incentive is the HI at Wakefield on the M6. They used to give a wine voucher for redemption at the bar and sometimes a discount on your meal. On top of that if they had th exec rooms available - you got one without asking. And if that wasn't enough, once a month the manager has a get-together with PC clients and has a free bar for a couple of hours - beat that!!
On the other hand, I've found that most Hi's usually try to keep the exec room if they think ther's half a chance to sell them - The one at Hemel Hempstead on the A5 (think it comes under Luton for some strange reason) NEVER gives you a room unless you haggle (out loud) and the bar food is rubbish as well.
There should be some kind of standard, after all you only get to Platinum because you've gave them a lot of buisness.

My experiences in 2009:
1/ Sheffield gave automatic upgrade to exec. room PLUS free drink at the bar
2/ Lancaster gave 20% discount on a 2 course meal, or a bottle of wine, or a free desert and coffee (In fact the nice receptionist gave us all three!)
3/ Newcastle Seaton Burn; a HI we use 4/5 times a year...NOTHING, even after asking, though the manager will buy you a drink if you are lucky enough to be around for his monthly meeting.
