I have been asked once if I would like a room upgrade based on my status with PC! How is this working out for the rest of you guys?
I'd say I get an upgrade over 50% of the time. If I am given an upgrade without having to ask for it, the employee usually just tells me. I don't think I've ever had anyone ask me if I wanted an upgrade. One situation that irks me is when the employee tells me I have been upgraded to an executive room because of my status, when that's the type of room I had already reserved and paid for!
Wasn't offered upgrades but receive upgrades 90% of the time when staying @ IHG hotels.
Think, only think, I got one in Caen in November 2007, when the hotel was pretty empty. These people are not so generous as they like you to think.
I'd say I get them about 50% of the time - not always told - sometimes just stamped on room card, or just get them anyway - my colleague asks regularly and gets them (and he is Gold)
at IC hotels my ambassador status guarantees it - which is absolutely fantastic - but outside of that, my luck at other hotels has been less than wonderful (especially at holiday inn where on one occasion I was even given a room that the hotel later admitted was substandard)
I travel in Uk a lot and i reckon that i get an upgrade 90% of time in Holiday Inn . I have even been upgraded in a Crowne plaza which is more of a challenge .I am platinum status so it should guarantee a better room .One dodge sorry booking path that i use , is is book rooms for my colleagues and they get upgraded as well ,which gets you a boit of good will after the trip .
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW YOU ALL DO IT I HAVE NEVER HAD AN UPGRADE YET
PLEASE TELL ME YOUR SECRETS
We are upgraded almost every time to a suite. If they don't offer automatically, we ask if that is an upgraded room. It will always be upper floor with a view or newly renovated room. Thanks Priority Club!
Last night, got a sweet King size bed with a Jacuzzi! It helps if you're Platnium, I average about 90% of the time. They usually treat me very well. I once got a three room suite with Jacuzzi, conference and full kitchen with a $99 booking!
THANK YOU BUT I THINK THE SYSTEM IS DIFFERENT IN SCOTLAND AND I ALWAYS MAKE THE MISTAKE OF BOOKING A REALY GOOD ROOM IN THE FIRST PLACE MAYBE I SHOULD BOOK A CHEAPER ROOM FIRST.
I FIRST GOT MY PC IN CANADA AND USA AND BOY DO YOU DO THINGS DIFFERENT OVER THERE
Yes, I travel all over, Europe and Canada are a little diferent. I always book at least 3 days in advance, and I almost always book the "Standard Room." I usually only stay one or two nights per hotel, which probably makes it easier to upgrade me. Good luck!
I would say I generally get upgraded 95% of the time, obviously not in Express by Holiday Inns, but I have asked for what they would deem as the 'nicest' room and if available they are happy to give me that room.
Whereabouts in Scotland? I've stayed at the Holiday Inn, Theatreland in Glasgow many times and have always been upgraded there to an Executive Room based on PC status. You're probably right if you say you are booking a really nice room first as there may not even be scope to upgrade.
This is not my experience. I mainly use Express and have often asked for a move if room too noisy or hot and have always been refused even when I was a platinum member. Attitude seems to be rooms are preallocated and can't be changed.
Different experience at Holiday Inns where I would say I get an upgrade 50% of time.
Sounds like we don't do as well in UK as USA.

I guess if you book one of the best rooms in the house they can not upgrade you. Upgrades also depend on your level in PC Platinum Elite should get you an upgrade to the next level in HI and CP hotels.Always ask "what upgrade have you been able to offer me?"
Hello,
Could you please explain what you mean by "Upgrades also depend on your level in PC Platinum Elite "?
How could the hotel possibly know your participation level or total point count as it is in constant flux?
Thank you.
I travel mainly in the UK..........last year approx 140 nights mainly in Holiday Inns.......actual forth coming upgrades poor, even when asking at check-in it is very poor {according to IHG I am in top 5% worldwide c/c members???} which is disappointing, however, one trick I have now learnt when booking online in comments I mention Platinum Member & ask for upgrade which now seems to work a little.......Crowne Plaza's though the few times I have stayed generally upgraded and treatment of Platinum members is far better........Number of times actually asked approx 4 over the years.....
Si
I always expect an upgrade except in HIX as all rooms are the same. But I do make it clear that I have RA Platinum status. Now RA does not guarantee you anything in hotels other than IC's when you will get at least a double upgrade often to a suite. In HI I have been given suites and nearly always executive rooms. When an Exec room is not available I get the bits and pieces like robes, toiletries water etc. sent to my room.Ask and you will get, don't ask ....
I don't expect upgrades. If I get one it's fine. When booking a room, I always book flexible rates and as stated before, get upgraded 90% of the time. Here in the US most of the HIX do have suites and I am happy when I get one.
I do appreciate ever upgrade and let the staff and the GM know about it.
At the ICs, the upgrades to also consist of suites. Nice benefit for RAs. At some ICs I do refuse the suites and request a single room since I don't like climbing stairs to the bed room.
Getting upgrades mostly depends on what rate you book with andit's also helpful to add a little note in the comment line to make the hotel aware of your status.
Quite interesting Ronald, I must admit I never expect an upgrade as I appreciate that with PC it's not a given, but possibly I should expect them then???? But it is very interesting to note that with your ambassador card you almost get upgrades regularly at HI??? As for the bits and pieces I never get offered them.........should I ask or should it be an expected level of service for a platinum member that is the question {just to be the conversation going}

Stanley,
When I check-in, if the employee does not tell me what type of room I have or mention any "perks," I ask what kind of room I have. If I do not have at least an executive level room, I ask if one is available. If one is not available, the employee at least codes my key so I can have access to the lounge. Or, at HIX, I ask if a suite is available. When an employee does not reference my platinum status, provide an upgraded room or any discount coupons, then I ask if the hotel offers coupons or extras for platinum members. It seems that sometimes new employees haven't learned all the steps yet, and if the key packet is not fully prepared before my arrival, then it's sometimes not stuffed with all the goodies. Once, when a hotel was not able to provide an upgrade, they delivered a cheese and fruit basket to my room a bit later. I thought that was impressive! As JBa mentioned, I also write comments in the comment line when making my online reservation stating my room preferences.
Iristina Hi
I have started to old comments thing a while ago but it seems a bit hit and miss......but will ask more if no upgrade is forth coming for "perks" although I appreciate the upgrade is not a given and as PC say if available......just from a point of interest are you in the UK????
Si
Stanley,
No, I stay mainly in the US. I just re-read your earlier post and see I missed that you stay mainly in the UK, so I guess our experiences will be slightly different.
Hey,
Possibly, but it is always worth a try though.
Simon
I need to clarify, The Royal Ambassador Card does not give you additional rights in hotels other than intercontinental Branded hotels. However the Platinum PC level does, these are earnt priveledges so you have every right to expect them. I do find that the more aware Crowne Plazas and Holiday inns are aware of RA status and if there is a much better room will offer it. I make it my business to get to know people at the hotels I stay at more often and this also has benefits.
I got offered a upgrad on Sat in London-my very first upgrade ever with any hotel!! was very chuffed...
The last time I stayed at a Holiday Inn, which was last week at the Holiday Inn El Paso Airport. Got an upgraded room without asking.
I ask for it!
Sometimes I even have to argue for it.
Like if it is a jacuzzi suite room or a room that is limited at the hotel and I know it's available by checking online or on the phone then i have to push the issue and show them that 1. It's available to the public as an open room and 2. threaten to call PC if they do not give me the upgrade I am entitled to.
They like to hold on to thier suites and nicer rooms to make more money i realize and understand this especially when the chain is privately owned it is a harder case. I also know that I am a good customer and I deserve it and if they are nice I may choose to stay and spend more money with thier site next time or choose another IHG site if they are going to be rude.
Most places are pretty good about upgrading but with as much as I travel and spend with IHG I do not mind going head to head with local staff to get what I am supposed to.
No manager or Hotel staff member wants an irate survey customer response from a frequent club member / traveler. I am platinum elite so even more so I make it clear not to mess with me or **** me around with my upgrades because i am the customer that writes up my stay every time good or bad and gets the surveys and personal phone calls to see just how happy I am with my stays.
Christie
Wow ~ Yes, I always ask if an upgrade is available if nothing is mentioned; however, I don't think I would ever argue with a staff member about this. I am a platinum member also and stay at hotels over 150 night a year. The way I am recognized does make a difference about whether I will choose that particular hotel again though, as well as other factors.
I recall one time when I was not upgraded and I knew there was a honeymoon (2-level) suite available. I understand they would want to rent this room to a paying guest, so I pleasantly expressed my disappointment. Shortly after I got situated in my room, Room Service delivered me a cheese and fruit basket, as a token of apology for not having an upgraded room for me. This made a positive impact on me.
Not as often as I would like, in fact rarely. I must ask.
In the UK - hardly ever.
In my experience, Priority Club members are much better treated in North America.
Am always told I am being upgraded, but having stayed in the hotels before, I know it is not a real upgrade. I have stayed over 150 nights at Intercontinental/holiday inn the last year and get very little for it (I even get them trying to sell me 'ambassador' membership which seems to me paying extra to get me the benefits I should be getting already).
By contrast, I have only stayed in Hilton hotels 30 ish nights this year, and 1) I get priority check in and 2) Always get a 'real' upgrade.
I also like the HHonors program. I think it is easiest to maintain status with PC and HHonors (They are my top 2 hotel programs). One difference with HHonors is the upgrades are consistent and you get to pick what you want -- NICE option!
On second thought, the upgrades we get at IHG are actually an extra. As a Platinum member, I always get my bonus points, so any perks at check-in are extra perks. The upgrades from HHonors are either a choice of bonus points, free Internet (at properties that charge), an upgrade, etc.

I have never been given an upgrade and haven't asked which I guess I need to after reading this . I am a Platinum Member and its rare when I am even recognized as a PC member.
I have been A gold member to a Platinum member and have NEVER been offered a room upgrade. I have traveled ALL over the US
and have NOT gotten even an offer for a room upgrade. I definitely will start asking EVERY time I check in.
I've had Platinum status for the last 4 years. I've been staying at the Holiday Inn, Portsmouth for the last 5 months and have only had an upgrade ONCE. Upgrades seem to be extremely rare these days!
It very much depends on the hotel that you're staying in. I'm also a regular at the Holiday Inn, Portsmouth - the problem is that there are so many 'regulars' because of the location that you're unlikely to get an upgrade (~ 1/year ? for me). Having said that I probably get an upgrade 90% of the time when staying in any other hotels in the chain, so probably can't complain too much.
I cannot remember the last time I was given an upgrade which perhaps is a sign that check in staff are not conforming to the policy of offering upgrades.
It would be nice to be offered the upgrade at every opportunity.
More importantly I feel that when you redeem points for free nights the hotel actively books you into the lowest grade room possible
I find this an abuse of my loyalty and happens all the time in the USA
Never and i have been a memebr for a number of years!
For me - just two weeks ago, I checked in to the Holiday Inn at Paris-Velizy and was automatically upgraded to an executive room.
(I didn't get any such offer at Tours the following week - maybe I should have asked - but I did get a lovely view overlooking the main
railway station!)
Tony
I've been Platinum status for a year now, and get upgraded once in every 5 visits (approximately). The last upgrade was at the Holiday Inn, Guildford, Surrey, and the room was too big!! You just can't please some people!
Ian
I got upgrades almost 100% of the time once I got to Gold level. Most of my travel was last year, due to being selected for a contract subcommittee (our facility is unionized) and having to travel across the state every week for around 4 months - with an average 2-3 day stay. I stayed at the same Holiday Inn Express almost exclusively, so as my status went to Gold, and then Platinum, the desk was aware of it and I got upgrades pretty much as I earned the levels. They even made the bookings for the next week for me. Hopefully the local will send me back over as other events come to pass, but all in all it was a good experience with the free wireless Internet and breakfast.
Automatically upgraded to an exec room at the HI Southampton last Monday....
Only upgraded once in 4 years! Actually rare to get welcomed as a PC member!
I was not asked, and when I requested an upgrade. I was told there were no upgrade rooms available with a king bed that they could put an additional bed into for my child.
I do not feel the hotels are consistent with acknowledging the Platinum/Ambassador members.
ALmost all the time. Granted, I stay at the same place 80% of the time so they know me quite well. I am a member at other hotels and they rarely upgrade me unless it's due to corporate title. IHG has been pretty good to me.
Over the last 2 spring breaks, we were upgraded only once in about 16 stays. We were traveling on the East Coast. We had better luck out West three years ago. It is very inconsistent and one of the most frustrating things we experience with this program.
I get an upgrade of some description on the majority of my stays. The really good upgrades, like a suite, or less commonly, the club floor, are pretty few and far between.
I have to say i dont get upgraded very often and have to ask if there is an upgrade available. I think its about 25% of the time that I get anywhere.
In Crowne plaza where they have exec lounges I think they should let Platinum card holder in even if they dont get an upgrade because the rooms are all book.
any thoughts?
I usually always receive access to the executive lounge if I am not upgraded or booked on that floor. And yes, I agree that should be a given for Platinum members. Marriott gives an upgrade or lounge access to Gold members and above, when available. Hilton lets you choose whether you want additional bonus points or an upgrade.
That being said, I do want to add that I think it is easiest to obtain status with PC. I maintain Platinum status with PC, Gold with HHonors, and Silver with Marriott. Although I stay at IHG properties more than Marriott, it is not double.
I mainly travel the Southeast US and I would say that 99% of the time I am offered and upgrade as a PL Member. I mostly stay at the HI Express or HI's. I have found that most of the HI Express are newer and nicer and usually offer a good breakfast.
I hear what everyone is saying, but it is my understanding that you have to request the upgrade. I may be misinformed, but I always ask for upgrade and get it. Sometimes, I don't need the upgrade, or even want it. IE when I am just staying overnight late. I always ask for the upgrade when I'm traveling with my family, or if I'm staying longer than just one night. I don't need all the specials just for an overnight trip. I've noticed that not getting everything humanly possible that can be got at checkin really irks some people, and this I don't understand. It boils down to, ask for what you want, or what you need.
I've never been denied an upgrade, once I have ASKED for it.
This seems to vary hugely by brand and country
Holiday Inn Express - I have never been upgraded but the rooms are all the same anyway
HI or Crowne Plaza in the UK - very hit or miss. In fact being a platinum member seem sto make virtually no difference at all in the UK
Netherlands - regularly upgraded
USA - always upgraded and often to a separate floor for elite members with a separate lounge
ICG need to get some consistency on their levels of service in different countries. The UK is by far the worst
I have found it very hit and miss in the UK too. If I regularly stay at a hotel I tend to be upgraded, others seem to virtually ignore my platinum status
I've stayed at HI and Crown Plaza recetly. I booked the upgraded room cause I knew they would not give it to me. It really depends on where your staying and if your a repeat customer.
I'm also a Hilton Diamond member going on 5 years. I book a family stay a the local Airpot Hilton location. I had 35 family members staying in-house and we had a wonderful time. I may try HI or Crown Plaza for a family event, but really it depends on how you carry yourself and treat the staff.
I usually put a note in the box when booking online requesting an upgrade. If I find that i've been bumped, I have just gone and emailed a note to priority club and usually the Manager is calling me the next morning, offering free points, free internet, etc. When I make the reservation at the last minute, I'm more understanding, but if I've made the reservation more than 3 day out, I usually expect an upgrade or perks with my stay. Especially if that say is more than one night. I've been to conferences and stayed 5 or more days. When I'm paying over $150.00 a night for the "Conference Rate" and I'm a VIP member I expect a certain acknowledgement. I've stayed 8 night in the Orlando are and the room and taxes were over $1400.00. I had found that if I use room service or other on-site resturants and bill to room, I get my points and bonus too. Some say the room service and such are way expensive, but it depends on your situation. If I get in late due to flight delay, etc, room service or local on-site dining is very conveint to me. Even if I have a rental car, I may not know the local area and I don't like driving aroung to find a place @ 12:30 AM when I really want to eat and get to sleep. I have gone to local WalMart and similar stores to purchase items for a multi-day stay in a city or town.
All in all, I really enjoy being in the Prioty Club as an RA/PL Member and Hilton Hhonnors as a Diamond VIP. I try and split my stays between both brands. However, I do patron those locations that do cater better to my needs and wants.
Very often.
When making a reservation on line, I request an upgrade in the comments section.
Upgrades it seems are given not only based on member status, but also accumulated points. If you have alot of points, I believe it helps when requesting upgrades.
Pretty much each time in a HI and CP......HIXP pointless all rooms the same although in new ones in Middle East they give you a good view, etc.
I stay at CP in Glasgow a lot and every time i have been upgraded, except 1, i was there for 5 nights and they didn't have an exec room for the whole stay so gave me normal room for 1st night then exec for rest of stay. (gave me lounge access for all nights)
HI;s tend to be a bit hit and miss, always have to ask. One even said no upgraded rooms availabe, until i said, "so if i go online now here in reception i won't be able to book an exec room via your web site?" Got the exec room which suprisingly had just become availabe. (so i always check now before i check in !)
Except in the US even on holiday have always had some sort of upgrade whatever hotel. Also last time in Tampa, CP upgraded us and the other couple with us.
I cannot remember ever being upgraded.....last stay in New York City, I not only had no upgrade but I also had no hot water one day, and the management treated me like I should be thanking them for staying there. My hosts were exptremely embarrassed, as they recommended the property to me, and I was an outside speaker brought in for a big event at the Consulate.
12 months agao in Greece! In the UK - well I cannot remember the last time I was upgraded!
Have had an upgrade quite a few times but that was about 2 years ago!!
I only recently became a Gold Club member and we had booked a special Priority club offer of room plus 15 nights parking at Holiday Inn Heathrow. When we arrived we were upgraded to an Executive room for the first time ever! Unforutnately we arrived at 10pm and left at 5am!
I mostly stay in the UK hotels, but have stayed in some European ones and I have never been offered an upgrade as a Platinum member. I didn't think you were entitled to it as a Gold PC member. You shouldn't have to request it. The member booklet says complimentary upgrade when platinum member. This implies it should be offered.
everytime... wold not stay without!
Also stay regularly in UK and Europe. Only once offered an upgrade. Seems in Europe this is not so likely
Problem with IHG is that it is very geared to business people - if you aint one then your chances of an upgrade reduce.
6 Months ago. I am a platinum member and I ALWAYS have to ask for an upgrade, but I rarely get it, because I want a smoking room, and very few suites are "smoking"
I've been a customer at the same Hotel since 2006, I stay there about twice a month. This last year they have upgraded me every stay unless they are very busy. Overall they have treated me well, ...despite being ejected from the premises one memorable night I continue to patronize the establishment.
I was not asked if I wanted a room upgrade, it was given to me when I checked in. My one and only room upgrade came at the perfect time. My family and I where up in Cincinnati ( Crowne Plaza Blue Ash ), I booked a standard suite and upon check in I received a double room suite. The family and I enjoyed a mini vacation. This was just 2 weeks ago.
We got upgraded when we were in Florida last week - to an executive room in a Crowne Plaza - for 2 nights. My husband quite regularly gets upgraded at the Heathrow Crowne Plaza, sometimes to concierge level.
It really depends on wheere I'm staying. I frequent a lot of the same hotels and some are great at offering an upgrade and other never do.
Surely your post brings us back to basics. We join Priority Club to gain benefits, if one of those as a Platinum member is to be offered an Upgrade then the hotel is obligated to give you an upgrade, no question. IHG offers benefits in the hope you will use IHG as our hotels of choice. That being said then part of the bargain is to honour the offered benefits.
Well I finally got tired of not being offered an upgrade. I was checking in, asked for my Platinum member upgrade, and I was told there were no Suites available. So when I got up to my room, I went online-and checked. the hotel I just checked into had suites available on the holidayinn website. So I emailed Holiday inn, saying I did not appreciate being told no suites were available, but upon checking myself, they were.
My response from Holiday Inn was it was at the hotels discretion. and basically tough sh%t.
What the heck is the point of earing plat status, if this is the kind of response you get????
Bring it to the notice of IHG on their feed back section. As Marlene often says ask for an apology and a reasonable number of points.
I would aslo reccoment that you email the hotel in which you have a booking a couple of days ahead advise them of your arrival and status and ask then as to the expected upgrade.
I did contact IHG, and their answer was it was at the hotels individual discretion as far as upgrades. I take that as tough sh%t! and deal with it.
So wrong of the hotel clerk and whom ever you spoke to at IHG.
If suites were available then you should have been upgraded, unless your stay was longer and the suite was booked for later days in your stay. Still no excuse for the poor treatment you received.
I think this deserves a second call, escalate the issue to the next level.
Perhaps send an e-mail so everything is in writing (paper trail) and you will have a number assigned to your complaint.
Persistence may just get you a reward. Try again and keep us posted!
I did email, and got basically the same response, and a link to the member benefits guide online. Only ******* because I had asked for an upgrade, in the comment box of the reservation and in person for my last 10 stays and not once was upgraded.
It was only for 1 night (as most of my stays are), and I just can't believe that when you check in at 5pm and there are still better rooms available, that they could not have given me an upgrade. HIG' response was ****, but I got the same answer online (email) as I did on the phone.
This attitude of the front desk clerks is incredibly bad for business. There have been many posts regarding the lack of acknowledgement for Platinum Elite status, Ambassador and R.Ambassador status.
I wonder if any of the moderators are taking the message to the top and if we will see improvement.
It is a room with a bed, a TV, a desk and a bath.
What else is required?
I used to stress over upgrades.
Now I had rather have an extra pillow and towel.
I fully agree with you.
Rarely in the past, though often extras such as vouchers for food/drink were provided.
This year I've been upgraded without asking twice for my last two stays at the same hote in UK, at MILTON KEYNES -EAST M1,JCT.14 LONDON ROAD, NEWPORT PAGNELL, MK16 0JA, ENGLAND. -
They are now at the top of my list of preferences for that area.
I stay regularly at the Crowne Plaza Leeds and have ALWAYS been updgraded since becoming a PC member (though I do usually have to ask first).
Also stayed last weekend at CP Glasgow with family and was automatically upgraded to suite - so no complaints from me.......
I got a Priority Club credit card last year and I have managed to achieve Platinum Status so I have been lucky enough to get upgraded on most visits if the hotel has suites or executive rooms. My last upgrade was when we stayed in Crowne Plaza Key West when we got their best room the Tennessee Williams Suite and I had only paid for a standard room.
Only ever been upgraded once in 6 years, in the UK. Just don't think they look at the status but then how many hand over their cards when checking in?
Presenting cards on checking in doesn't work; we find that rooms have already been allocated a day or two in earlier
hiya all,im a relatively new member & im really impressed so far, hospitality is good the places ive stay around england &scotland have been great so im looking forward to many more stays, baz
Amongst my many stays this year, one hotel does stick out above the rest. I've had 16 nights at the Holiday Inn Filton in Bristol and I've been upgraded every stay, so I can't complain.
hiya all,ive stayed in london glasgow swindon loads of times and have never been offered an upgrade, ive booked the crown plaza m/chester airport 4 october ill try 4 it then aye.
Hi
used to get asked all the time if I wanted an upgrade, but can't remember thelast time. I think they have stopped offering it. We got an upgrade when we were put in a smoking room although we had booked a non smoking. Upto that point it must be over 12 months since we were upgraded. I think a lot of the perks of having this membership are falling by the wayside. The only good thing about it noe is the fact that you can use points for nights and even they are going up!
I would say I get a room upgrade 75% of the time which is great!
Most of the time once I got to Platinum, even when I am paying with points.
Never - I have been a platinum member for years and maintain status each year - I am looking at other reward programmes now - so much for loyalty!
We are the same, Platinum status, maintained each year and yes We agree so much for loyalty!
In 5 years I have only been upgraded once. I don't know how you guys get the great upgrades
Been a platinum member for 3 years never had or been offered an upgrade, it is a bit of a standing joke
Looks like there could be a problem brewing here for Priority Club! Maybe they need to look at what's going on, I wonder if they look at these messages from their members?
Ironically things have been getting a little better for me recently, however, the interesting thing for me, since this thread was started, it would appear that across the pond, US Platinum members seemed to be valued more and treated better than you do this side of the pond!!!!???????
I find this all very strange. I have been upgraded every time for the last two or three years.except on one occasion and then they gave me all the trappings of an upgrade in the standard room, water, robes etc.
I would ask:- are your bookings noting your PC number at the time of booking,
Are the rates corporate rates if so then you may not get points either.
Ronald Hi
I know we have had this conversation several times on this and other threads, but I think it goes to show the inconsistency of the system. I can appreciate that different methodologies can be used when booking a room which may have an effect on the outcome.
As for myself I book online and have done so for a long time, via my online account, this will show my number etc, I always put in the commentary that I am a platinum member and please upgrade, knowing that an upgrade is not an absolute.....but similar to others, I don't seem as lucky as some with upgrades all the time, and when not upgraded I have never had the extras {true I haven't asked for them}, but should I or should the hotel do this to show their appreciation of a loyal and valued customer?????
Whether it is a training issue or a I.T. system issue is another story altogether. Several times when checking in I have noticed some lower level members have been upgraded and not I, when questioned I get the blank look and some bull of a story......even hotels I visit regularly and have a profile on their system which highlights certain requests these regularly aren't fulfilled, which triggers the start of the same old conversation which you get fed up with having which ultimately leads you into ever decreasing circles like the uslum bird, and we all know what happened there!!!!
If anyone from IC reads this I would find it most interesting if they could explain to me and others what training {certainly in the UK} the front of house staff or whoever allocates room bookings receives or not as the case may be. As this may provide an answer or insight to the never, sometimes or always upgraded replies stated in this thread, because the inconsistency is quite apparant.
Furthermore it would be interesting to know {although I am sure the information wouldn't be issued} what percentage of their mystery shoppers get upgraded automatically, what percentage have had to ask and what percentage weren't??
If that information doesn't exist then it should be monitored and I am more than happy to act as a mystery shopper for them and start supplying that information!!!!!!
As I have said elsewhere before, from my very nice Xmas card stating that with the amount of stays with IC it puts me within the top 5% globally of members, and I am valued, well I may be at a top corporate level, but it would seem that this message does not get cascaded down, to make me feel a valued member and treated as such.
I hope that my most recent blog post may be helpful
http://community.priorityclub.com/people/ronaldchadwick?view=blogposts
I have received an upgrade everytime I've stayed at the HI or Crowne Plaza. The best was CP Melbourne where they upgraded me to a suite on the beach TWICE! I always book a regular room and get an upgrade to the Executive floor or a better room.
Debbie,
I wonder if there is anything you do to increase your chances of an upgrade?
I've never had an upgrade,i always book the cheapest package standard. I stayed at the CP Amsterdam early this year and had nothing, even when i presented my card with platinum status.
I guess that if you are a Platinum PC member and it was a qualifying rate, (interesting debate on Qualifying rates in discussions) and that you were not a terrible late arrival and had emailed asking for an upgrade you should have received an upgrade.. I have a blog on increasing your chances of an upgrade.
I ask for one at the time of the reservation. I have noticed if you want a smoking room you're out of luck on an upgrade.
I enjoy reading all your responses. You certainly are well traveled!
I must admit that i am upgraded 80% of time and tend to use the same 4 or 5 hotels around the country .Funnily enough i dont seem to get an upgrade on Tuesday nights as this seems to be event or conference night Regards Peter
Hi All
I keep reading all the different responses and all the ways you all get your upgrades, but at the end of the day when you took out your membership it was a certaintity that you would get an upgrade. This was one of the reasons we took it out. when we reached Platinum a number of years ago we thought we'd made it but this has proved to be not the case. You shouldn't have to ask. You shouldn't have to put it on your booking when you book. YOU shouldn't have to do anything at all, it should be offered automatically if available and let's face it, it isn't. So come on PC get it sorted or there could be a mass exodus of members and without these business men you could be in trouble!
I have to ask , what am I doing differently to get an upgrade every time. did you take on board the suggestions in my blog?
I have to agree with Ron - I'm always upgraded these days. However it's not through chance. I email the hotel prior to arrival to let them know that I'm coming. Also, a little trick I have learned for Holiday Inns. Check on your PDA or Iphone before arrival at reception if the hotel is still selling Executive Rooms. If they are, then you can be upgraded under the clause "subject to availability". I've not had to use it for a while - however you can imagine the face at the front desk at CP London Docklands in 2007, which was the last place I challenged "No upgrade as we're full Sir!" Somehow I ended up with a suite overlooking the O2 complex... lovely!
I think most if not all hotels will upgrade you if they know that you are coming. For some unknown reason the various systems in the hotels don't flag status well enough. Also, unlike most 5 Star properties, I don't think ICs hold a daily management meeting to discuss arrivals and guests with their teams.
Using the old saying "If you're part of the problem, then you're part of the solution" then make that soloution by sending a quick introductory email to the Guest Services Manager of the property stating what time you will be arriving, and your status level (so long as it is Platinum or above) It works for me.
In terms of other non-IHG properties. Well the same works for me at Marriott, which is the other group where I have FT Status. There's no point having the "Do you know who I am?" conversation once you arrive. Play fair and let the hotel know you're arriving, that's what I say.
Tris ;-)
I agree about letting them know you are coming but it doesnt always work least not in the UK in the Us and in Australia i get upgraded without fail and made to feel special in the UK you are just another number. Must admit Hilton treat me better and i only have Silver plus card.
But what Tris. and I are saying is by following a simple plan of asking by Email giving your PC number and booking ref there is a 90% plus chance of getting the upgrade. If it works for us in the UK then it should for you to.
I just celebrated my 20th wedding anniversary in NYC. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Times Square using my PC points. I followed Ronald's suggestion and sent an email to the hotel a few days before my stay and I received a response the next day. They thanked me for my loyalty to the IHG Brand and upgraded my room and provided a complimentary bottle of wine upon check in. I was treated very well during my stay, and this was for a stay that was paid for using my points!
I am so glad the email beforehand worked and that you had an excellent time in New York.
Hello GBra263,
I agree with you that the upgrade "game" with PC is very inconsistent, but you need to remember that it is up to the individual hotel to give you an upgrade or not.
You also have to look into what the hotel considers an upgrade and what you expect. There are so many variations that I've given up to ask for upgrades when checking in. Most of my bookings are done online either by myself or our TA. When I do the booking myself, I put in the comment line a note providing the hotel with my status and the request for an upgrade if possible. This had a success rate of 90 % so far and the rest of the time I still had the room that I had originally booked.
When the TA has done the reservation, it becomes a little bit more difficult. I verify if my PC number was added to the reservation and if not I do add it. Then I send an email to the hotel, front desk manager, guest relations or GM providing them with my information and also ask if it it possible to receive an upgrade.
I normally see within a couple of days before my stay that my reservation has changed and not showing the original room that was booked. Depending on what the hotel has to offer, this then can be a executive room, room on a higher floor, club room or suite.
Once I arrive at the hotel I don't push the upgrade issue anymore. If I get an upgrade that hasn't shown up in my reservation, I do appreciate that. If not,it doesn't matter either. I don't want to spoil my stay with thinking about what upgrade I could have gotten.
Use Ronalds blog to try to improve your upgrade chances but remember, it's up to the hotel if they give you an upgrade or not.
During my seven years as a member, the last 4 being platinum status i have been upgraded 95% of the time. Ive found the best place for upgrades are Asia and the UK.
I was recently upgraded to a club room at the Crowne Plaza Crawley.. Excellent
The weekend of the 22nd August 2009 at the Amstel Intercontinental Amsterdam. We were upgraded from a City View to a River View room.
This weekend got upgraded but generally do not have to ask as ussually stick to the same hotel only asked if ,
it is new staff we do not know.
The Ambasador membership usually gets me an upgrade, Last one was the Prk Lane London, where I got a lovely park view.
A small twist to this question......
I booked 2 nights at a Holiday Inn last Thursday and Friday. We checked and were told that we would be in an Executive Room due to my Platinum PC status. 2 great days were had and at checkout I was presented with my invoice. We had paid for the room only several days in advance and nothing else was bought in the hotel, so no bill to settle. I folded the invoice up without looking at it until we got home. The description of the rate was for Bed and Breakfast. That was total news to me. We had never been told that our upgrade also included breakfast. It would have been very nice to have.
Looks like I'll be quizzing the reception staff a little closer in future.
Too bad you missed out on the gift of breakfast!
Again, it was wonderful they gave you the upgrade, but the quality of service received from the desk clerk was lacking..he/she should have informed you!
So many threads with this type of story, I do hope IHG is listening!
Had confirmed our next trip to IC Cannes, upgraded to a seafront Deluxe from a rear facing Classic (think that means Standard)
Funnily enough I was upgraded in the HI Doncaster just last week but I reckon I'm upgraded as little as 5% of the time so I'll be trying the e-mailing in advance trick to see if that makes a difference
Simply on PC status
Never
and its for a simple reason - I'm wheelchair bound. Please don't read that as "they won't because" its "they can't because" (in most properties)
As I have been informed its not a case of not wanting to, its a case of only making so many rooms accessible, and because they need to cater for the entire guest range they don't create accessible rooms at the different levels.
Hence my "sneaky" campaign to get PC to change from "room upgrade" to "facility upgrade!" - by that I mean give the guest a choice of "upgrade" be it free internet, free breakfast, better room..... let the choice be theirs ..... not only is it fairer to all, but more meaningful.... i mean a suite is nice but when you check in at 11pm and have a car waiting at 6am..... how much is a suite worth.... compared to breakfast that might not have been in your rate!
However on the IC front - every time (once beyond my status) as in IC's they seem to have at least one of each level (standard, club, suite) that can take a wheelchair or other disabled user. Another reason to love the ambassador program.
--
In fairness to the group re the PC elite side. - they have some wonderful people both on the ground and in corporate management roles that are always ready to debate and improve the program and facilities where they can (and they do!), and its partly for this reason I changed my hotel of choice from another large chain to IHG.
David,
Glad to hear your good praises and positve experiences regarding IHG and the Priority Club Program..
Respectfully,
You make a very valid point! Especially in the case of 'wheelers" it would be nice to have an option available for their upgrade such as a breakfast inclusion as you mentioned.
Maybe a fruit basket would be nice too.
Can I strongly say for the record - I am not having a go at IHG with regards to the upgrade policy. Its a difficult problem they handle very well. As a wheeler (never heard that but I like it), the concessions that tend to be made in our favour are amazing. The comment I made was cheeky, with a serious point.
And the policy changes I propose should be universal....... hoteling should be "guests way" (within reason). Even when I was able I would have prefered a drink at the bar to slippers in the bathroom....
IHG's care and access programs are way ahead of others in more areas than they are behind.
Now back to the thread topic please... as I also don't want to hijack it
Well then I must be awfully lucky, because it's rare when I don't get an upgrade of some kind. MOST times, they have a bottle of water and snack for me at check in. They don't always TELL me I've been upgraded, but upon going to the room I discover it. At the very least, they'll put me on the floor with special perks. Some hotels, a different view also indicates an upgrade, so it is different from one property to another.
Just this week, I used points for a mini-vaca with the fam, and that was automatically upgraded to the executive level.
platinum level
If it's available, I usually get it and don't have to request it
Not once in my last 6 years as a member!
I have had an Upgraded down grade once! I booked the King Room/Conf area, and they upgraded me to the executive floor in just a standard room. I didn't need the Conf area, but I paid for it. Then they informed me that the group who had the room extended their stay, and was holding a conference.
There have only been a few times I have been upgraded, and it is usually just to the executive floor if the hotel has one.
I am Platinum PC as well.
Platnium member... I've gotton a bottle of water etc but don't remember the last time I got a room upgrade, and, I travel every other week for my job.
I stay at the Crown Plaza in Helsinki 5-10 times a year. As a Platinum member, I would say I am upgraded 90% of the time to executive club floor -- but very rarely to a suite (not surprising since my corporate rate is more than 50% off rack rate). But the value is very high -- private lounge with breakfast and afternoon hors d'ouvres, and drinks (including wine and beer) available all day long.
I'm platinum level and I get upgraded most of the time. The exceptions are HI Express (nothing to upgrade to) and when hotel is full and again there is nothing to upgrade to. On some occasions, the check-in desk don't even mention the upgrade they just give you the room number. Sometimes I make a point of asking for access to the Executive floor to see what happens and on some occasions I've been told I have access anyway. On one occasion at a Candlewood Suites I arrived very late and had to collect my key from the safe only to find I wasn't in the upgraded room. Next morning I asked for the upgrade and it was give to me with no objections or quibbles.
If you don't get an upgrade, then ask for one. if you don't ask you don't get !!
Hi All, Gold level and always seem to get upgraded in the Holiday Inn in Guangzhou. Been there often and never yet failed to be upgraded. Also managed to get upgraded in High Wycombe with a free bottle of wine - nice!![]()
Never when staying in the UK, however on a recent trip to California it happened every single time, but then service is so much better in the US compared with the UK
Well having only just reached Platinum status I will find out later today if I manage to get an upgrade !!!
If not I will probably make a comment or two ![]()
Since reading the tips on this site I have e-mailed in advance twice and both times been upgraded so it appears to work.
On one occasion it was an Executive Room and the other it was a half bottle of wine.
Jubbly
Mike
Hi Mike,
Have you got a 'template' email that you sent... would be useful to see if it works for me today and the next few weeks ...
Cheers
Danny
Not really Danny
Normally just put a header with my Platinum Membership Number and the Booking Reference and then a cursory note to say
Hi
Looking forward to staying on 'date'.
I anticipate arriving around 'time' and as I will have guests I expect to have 3 of us dine at night.
Regards
Mike
Thanks Mike for the template! Ronald also touched on this issue in his blog post which might offer some insight as well.
Hope that helps,
It's a shocking state of affairs that we have to discuss ways of "engineering" an upgrade.
Surely IHG should take from this thread that the upgrades are still not working for 75% of the people? I'm hanging my head in shame and putting on the record that I also email every property before arrival to let them know I am coming as a way of securing an upgrade.
Tris ;-)
Hear Hear
To person in charge at IHG
I for one can't believe the amount of discussion this topic has raised, and when words like "do you have a template" get put in the mix if I were running the scheme I'd be a little worried that something has gone very wrong
We understand that if a property is full the last room is the room we get, no problem there, hence no 'guarantee' and that some people are impossible to upgrade as they need certain features in a room (nothing in lieu hurts a little but hey thats a different rant) but the terms state 'subject to availability" so thats not a point for argument
This is an official forum - paid and moderated by IHG, and the members here have a lot of experience of being guests (as well as on the whole being realistic in their expectations) so why not start a dialouge, a real one (not a check box style one).
A wise person once said 'profit is a by product of customer service' - I'm not saying your not good at customer service - just poor at clear guidence on this hot button matter.
Another way to look at it is to think about our conversations to others in pubs....... everybody brags a little..... give us something to actually brag about!
To finish with what I always say - a room upgrade isn't always the best way forward for all of your customers..... we have been loyal to you to get to a level that says upgrades are 'possible', at least be clear about what an upgrade is, be clear what we are getting, and be clear on the reasons why we don't from time to time.
I'm known for my candid way of putting things, I am not writing this to hurt you in any way and I appologise if you find my tone a little too strong.
Thank you for reading this
Tris,
I couldn't agree more, there seems to be great differences in how PC Platinum members {not including Ambassador members} get treated in the US and UK, after all regardless of how it it marketed there is no guarantee with promoted Platinum member benefits..........possibly they should review the process and treat all levels with the same revere as Ambassador's - although I appreciate that membership is purchased {$150??}.
Possibly increase the amount of stays to warrent that level i.e. 80 for platinum or introduce a black level at 80+ so you do get the automatic upgrades as with Ambasador???? Surely a loyal customer who spends large amounts of money with ICH, it isn't asking too much to recognised everytime??
Si
Upgrades to some may mean a bigger room, bigger bed, a certain floor, a high floor, or for me the view is the most important. It is important to know what you want before booking or checking in. It is always best to tell the hotel what you are specifically looking for in a different room.
Also, for special club access or a suite upgrade (both are not required even for Platinum Members), it may be possible to receive the upgrade for a small additional fee when you are a loyal customer to the particular hotel or a loyal Priority Club Member.
Respectfully,
Surely they could have a 'preferences' section as part of our profile Amanda, as I have with my preferred airlines?
That way they could at least try to give you what you prefer or if it's not available they could greet you professionally with a "we see that you prefer a suite but unfortunately they are all taken. However we've given you your second choice of complimentary wine"
Just a thought but as they appear to be very much into interaction it surely can't be too difficult.
Mike
Mike,
There is a similar option when booking an online reservation to enter special requests. Though this option is not a permanent addition to your profile as it needs to be completed on each reservation.
| Comments |
Hope that helps,
Yes and I sometimes use that but as has been pointed out we are told we will be upgraded if available but more often than not
have to ask and that is the gripe.
If they didn't say it nobody would bother I suspect.
Mike
Amanda,
I always fill in the comments section when making a reservation; however, I have often wished there was a more detailed "saved" profile I could complete as Mike suggested. Currently, the only information that is part of my permanent profile is my room preference - executive king room. The other hotel programs I belong to also let me add the following as part of my permanent profile: smoking preference, room location (near or away from elevator, high or low floor), pillow preference, and whether I want a mini-fidge or any extras.
Iristina,
I agree and think it is a great suggestion and somthing that could be implemented. Thank you
Mike,
I encourage hotels to aknowledge upgrades and Priority Club status upon arrival. Complimentary wine is a great easy way to show you recognize the member's status when an upgrade is not available.
Thanks,
Intersting comment about the wine.In my experience the hotels that are more likely to give me a complimentary beer or wine are also the ones most likely to upgrade me. In these cases, I find I generally get both.
To All,
What other things would you like to see offered? Free Breakfast Voucher? Points?
Thanks,
Amanda,
I love points. The hotel where I am staying right now gave me a slip at check-in that I could redeem for extra points or a beverage or other free items. I do not recall the other free items because I already turned it back in for the points.
When I receive vouchers, I like it when I can choose my "freebie" option. When I travel for business, I appreciate the free glass of wine more since this is not a reimbursable expense. I also like it when the coupon says "or $4 off a higher value beverage." I do not always like the house brands, so this is great. When I travel for pleasure, I prefer a free appetizer or breakfast because that is a better value when I'm paying for it.
If I was to pick just one thing I'd like extra, it would be to have breakfast as an additional benefit. Points would be nice if I was on a breakfast included rate though.
Since its been asked
the difference in price between 'room grades' [I know the program states an upgrade can be a better view, and the room is in the same class] I would say on a pure 'stay basis' is about $40 dollars a night. (obviously not between exec and suite!)
So to me that would encompass (per night!) :
A bottle of wine and some water
or
Breakfast for two
or
internet for stay
or
room upgrade
or
5000 PC points
or
40 dollars off spa treatment (if at the property)
or
Room service breakfast (for those with breakfast in their rate)
or
In room gift package - prehaps soft drinks, nibbles and a free movie
I imagine that if 'suite' was available as a request preference, then everybody would go for that :)
You very rarely get offered an upgrade - you generally have to request it! In my experience, if you don't ask you don't get - and they normally oblige.
I for one don't ask at check-in for a a couple of reasons the main two are
All this thread keeps throwing up is that unlike other reward / loyalty programs, the lack of clarity that surrounds it is not welcomed by those that should be being rewarded by it.
I'm all for losing an 'upgrade' to ensure another guest gets there special day made very special, but I'd put money on the fact that we who chat in this forum actually directly or indirectly are the people that keep IHG going.
I think the best thing IHG / PC could do at this stage is be clear about how they define upgrades, and how a guest can spot they have been. With other programs clearly showing what they offer it still strkes me as strange that PC still uses so many riders and ambiguous words.
David,
I am behind you
I never thought of the impact of asking for an upgrade around colleagues or other travel partners. I can imagine it might be uncomfortable for me. I wonder how others feel on that subject?
As Holiday Inn is rebranding, Priority Club Members will see a change. With the changes, staff will focus on arrival and welcome. The 'Stay Real' experience will ensure that the staff will treat guests like individuals. Each hotel will have a "Guest Champion" that focuses on Priority Club Members and is responsible for training staff to better meet those needs. Currently, many of the Holiday Inn's are undergoing rebranding and are training in the "Stay Real" program. All Holiday Inn employees will go through an extensive "Stay Real" training program to ensure guests receive the level of service they expect.
Respectfully,
Given the number of comments and passion that shows through this thread why cant IHG be proactive and set up a user group from members of the forum in different countries to complete a post stay evaluation which can be analyzed by someone to see if room upgrades were available and if so why they were not offered and if a substitute was offered instead. this could all be electronic. id be prepared to take part. (I'm Platinum)
I always fill in those paper questionnaires about was i recognized or made to feel special as a PCR member but never get any feedback. however, when i completed a similar one at a Hilton (im only Silver +) they contacted me because id made a slightly critical comment, and they gave me a suite upgrade on my next stay and everyone since.
Les
Les,
Currently, there is an option for members to post about their experiences, including recognition, that one can report on in the post survey sent to some members after a completed stay. I'm glad you take the time to fill these out. They are looked at by the hotel staff and are used in grading the hotel. Each hotel is required to meet a certain score.
Also, please share your experiences in the Priority Club GuestBook about your experiences.
Thanks,
Wow,
Only been gone for 3hrs and it is the longest thread in the world ! ![]()
Well for my very recent check-in experience received, I have arrived at my hotel knowing full well that it is fully booked.
I didn't ask for an upgrade and tbh wasn't looking for one today as it was only booked this morning.
However as I am a regular though I haven't been to this hotel for some months, the receptionist recognised me and greeted me by name then looked at my allocation (twin single bed) and promptly managed to change that to a twin double bed.
To me, customer service is paramount which is something that the UK seems to lack some of the time.
And at tonight's hotel I know that I will have good customer service....
I agree with other comments about not having to ask, but as someone else mentioned - if you don't ask you don't get and to be frank that's life !!!
Anyway we should be happy that IHG have the best hotel reward program and it remains as it is.
Hope everyone is having a good day.... I am ![]()
Danny
Les,
Sounds like a good idea and I'd volunteer as well, I did pose the question once if this sort of information was gathered from HI mystery shoppers on upgraded, had to ask or not..........but I haven't heard anything, if they don't collate possibly they should????
As for questionnaires, I gave up a long time ago as I thought it was a fruitless exercise as I never got any response.
Si
Not very often. I only remember one or two upgrades in 3 years period. And I was a Platinum Member, the hightest status.
For several years I was Platinum member in both Intercontinental (Holiday Inns) and Marriott chains. I have to say that I got much better treatment and recognition in Marriott hotels. So I don't maintain the Holiday Inn Platinum status anymore. It's not worth it.
Being a 'sad' person with Platimum Elite level on Priority Club (and in the top 5% of guests acording to my Christmas card) and several other hotel loyalty cards I usually 80-90% of the time get an upgrade without asking. The secret is to get your priority club number on the booking and to book a standard room. Sometimes you dont get one but the hotel is usually full. HI express its not possible but Platimun members get free internet access (I'm using it tonight :-) )
So recently stayed in Hong Kong and Koln, got an upgrade. Had to ask at Brussels and then got given one. The exception is the Holiday Inn Reading South in the UK where the past 6 times but the last one I have stayed I have never been upgraded. However writing to the HI website produced a different reaction last time I stayed and got an upgrade. Hopefully they'll continue the trend.
Its easier than getting an upgrade on flights.... now theres a different topic :-)
Being only at gold status, I have stayed at the same hotel for weeks. They know what room I like. I just went down to the desk to make sure I have "my" room for next week when I return. I have it. King bed, balcony, minii frig.
Also, in the few holiday Inn expresses I have stayed in, they do have suites. I have been upgraded and had the suite. They are very nice. Big bedroom and living room. The last one I stayed in had 2 bathrooms. So, when in a
Express, they might have them. So ask.
with regard to the HI express - which county are they in?
thanks for the additional info
Daivid
These were in the States. Pa to be exact. Very nice suites. Maybe most have them, just don't advertise them.
Maybe Amanda can answer this.
There are new rebranded Holiday Inn hotels that are called--Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites. Here is an example of one in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. The hotel has suites that feature a couch in a seperate living type or "multimedia" area. They are very similar to the executive rooms in a Holiday Inn. An example of another brand new Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites in Georgia has suites that offers premium amentities, more space, sleeper sofa, microwave, refrigerator, and 2 flat screen TV's. This hotel also has executive corner suites. The Atlanta/Buckhead Holiday Inn & Suites offers apartment style one and two bedroom suites with fully equipped kitchens which is similar to the Staybridge brand.
In Canada, the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites downtown Vancouver offers executive rooms with or without a balcony, and suites that have 2 bathrooms like member NAY1965 mentioned.
Hope that helps,
I have been a PC member for 12 years now, and have
been Platinum for a few. I have been up
graded very few times, but never asked. I made a reservation online for next week, and requested an upgrade. We will see what happens.
Just returned from the Carlton in Cannes, France and we had booked a classic room. This is a basic en suite room whith a nil view. We had a
high floor Deluxe sea view at least two grades if not three higher. I still do not understand why other guests do not get upgrades unless they do not advise the hotel of their status until they arrive and expect the hotel to conjure an availability late at night at short notice.
What really annoys me is it is almost impossible to get an upgrade if you take a child with you, the last few HI i have stayed at on my own i asked if i was likely to get an upgrade if my wife and daughter came with me and the answer has always been no.
All the higher level rooms seem to be one double or twin rooms with no rollaway bed.
Happy to say this happens pretty much most time...I do usually jead to the same locations, (mostly Crowne Plazas) and as well as being Platinum PC, I have a pretty good number of nights in the 6-7 hotels I mainly head to.
While I hope I never get to the stage of "expecting" an upgrade, I do look forward to seeing what happens...I travel for work (mainly) and its great staying in some rooms I could never otherwise afford / justify.
Agree with a previous poster, in that if my Wife and Daughter come along on a trip we dont seem to get the same upgrades...upsets her more than me though!
cheers
P
Now this is interesting, the last two posts by implication are suggesting that there are no upgraded family rooms. Should this be the case IHG could look into this and if they know a Platinum PC member is staying at least give the benefit’s of an upgrade in the family room, Such as better toiletries, robes, water and Fruit/Chocolate.
Just been upgraded again !
I checked in to a Candlewood Suites in Kansas City for 2 week last Friday. The guy at the front desk explained that they normally offer upgrades as a matter of course for Platinum members but they were sold out over the weekend and suggested I check with them on the Tuesday. I even saw on their checkin sheet at the time the words "no upgrade available". I have just been to see frontdesk and the swapped me from a studio to a nice comfortable 1 bed suite without any arguments - where I am currently sat typing this append (via their free internet) !
I cannot believe how disappointed I am. I have followed all the hints and tips and here I am, at the Holiday Inn Belfast for the next 10 nights - yes 10!!!! and nothing!!!!!
Platinum status was on my booking, I booked ahead, I notified them when I got here, I was refused an upgrade. I asked what they could do instead, the response I got was as follows - "I`m sorry but theres nothing we can do". 20% off the food bill however i am on an inclusive rate????Perhaps when they go under as they have no trade due to their negative attitude I shoud say "I 'm sorry, theres nothing I can do".
Well they have done it this time. There is a lovely Radisson SAS just round the corner and I will be using that in future.
Holiday Inn, I have been a loyal customer for 10 years but no longer. When I leave on the 18th September, I will never use a Holiday Inn again, I will take my 150+ nights a year on business trips to another chain. I already collect points at Radisson, Marriot and Jury's Doyle.
P.S you might want to move the mouldy bath mat from outside my door - I have already photographed the dirty windows, inspect droppings on the window sill and mould in the bathroom. I will send them to your head office to deal with.
Regards
Oughtonfamily
You did not mention if you emailed the hotel a couple or so days prior to confirm your staus and ask for confirmation of your upgrade. I would also ask, during your stay, to see the GM and put the question to him and even draw his attention to your post.
I have been getting them pretty consistently lately.....4 times in the last month
I get them all the time at IC's with Amb membership. With CP and HI, I will usually get best available, If I ask for it. sometimes I get a comped breakfast; sometimes not..
But if I don't ask for it , I don't get it.
I have been a gold member for about 3 years and never had an upgrade in the UK!
Infact it's rare I am even recognised as a member at all. The 'Priority Club Check In' just seems to be a carpet on the floor and not actually represent seperate check in. I have only once been welcomed as a gold member and offered discounts in the bar etc. (in Northern Ireland).
The Crowne Plaza I stayed in a few months ago (paid for with points) made no reference to PC and were rude and unhelpful through the enitre trip. I am in Shoreditch CP in a couple of weeks (also paid for with points) so we will see how that goes!
It doesn't take much, just a special welcome for being PC would make a big difference! Its ironic, I seem to be pretty good at blagging upgrades in many hotels except those involved with PC!?
I wonder if you have followed the advice given in my blog to improve your chances of an upgrade? such as Emailing ahead of your arrival indicating any preferences you may have. As it has been mentioned just turning up late in the day , when all rooms have been allocated , does not bode well for an upgrade. Try following the recommendations and I wish you sucess.
Thanks! I have sent the e-mail, fingers crossed I at least get some recongition when I arrive this time! ![]()
I just haqd to ask, so far into the year and you have yet to get to Platinum, Are you signed up for all the points offers Q$ bonus points . It is far easier to gain the points requirement than the number of nights.

When I signed up to all the offers on that site I got over 40,000 points for my next 2 nights stay so getting to Platinum should be easy if you stay away more than once a month.
Back on topic I have two nights booked in Yorkshire this week (2 different hotels) and I'll be checking to see if the advance e-mail works for upgrades and also whether the 6 x 1,000 bonus points offer works as I think it should.
Mike
Wow! It seems I am missing out a lot with these bonus things... I don't quite understand it, surely this scheme is to
award loyalty, not web browsing? I don't have time to go through all these offers and master the art of bonuses. I must stay on average at least once a month but only manage a rubbish 30-40k points. I even have a PC credit card I spend a fortune on ![]()
I reckon it took me around half an hour to register for ALL the offers contained on the two sites mate so it's well worth it as I reckon that in the last 2 months alone that half an hour has gained me around 35-50,000 ADDITIONAL points.
That could be two or more free nights away with you and yours so it's well worth it
Mike
Thanks Mike!
I have had a look and can't find much in the way of offers in Europe. Double points seems to be it at the moment. Sounds like you are doing really well with the points! Doesn't look like I really use IC hotels enough to benefit from most of the offers etc. Thanks for the advice though, I will keep my eyes out for more offers in the future. ![]()
Try registering for everything on that list Ronald linked mate, even the Platinum ones cos most work anyway lol
Further down the page there are some old offers and I found that most of those also worked as well so worth the extra effort.
Once you get Platinum it's easy to stay there because you get extra offers as a result and every stay gets you a 50% bonus on the base points too
Mike
Usually the offers are advised to you in the E news letter often not to apparent. This list shows every offer world wide some you may not be eligible for. However it does not take to long to work your way down the list.. If you look upon 25000 points being a free night in a reasonable Crowne plaza at say £185 PN ($300) and it takes you an hour to do the logging on to achieve that , not a bad hourly rate??
Fortunatly (I have a young family) I don't have to stay away enough to earn Platinum status.
I probably earn between 30,000-40,000 points/year, not enough to be regarded as important I am afraid. Gold status doesn't really count for much. It's a shame because even 30k points means a lot of stays and I always ask my PA to book IC hotels for the points.
Hello30 to 40,000 points can mean up to 8 free nights at a hotel. With gold status you might not get a lot of recognition but you can try to achieve platinum status by utilizing the promotions that PC has. Check out www.flyertalk.com they have a section for the IHG hotels. It's nice to be recognized as an elite member at a hotel but for me it's more important to maximize the points that I can get.
Actually I don't think Platinum status get much recognition either at Holiday Inns. I was Platinum for 2 years before I decided not to maintain it. I got much better treatment as a Platinum at Marriott.
I do agree with you that the PC platinum recognition is close to none existing, but as said in my previous post, PC is by far more superior then MR in respect of points earning.
You can achieve platinum status with PC either trough nights or points and most of us become platinum fairly early throgh points, while with MR you have to stay the 75 nights to become platinum.
Now sitting in CP Birmingham NEC, paid for a standard queen bed with lake view room only.
The room i have is an upgraded room with lake view including , water, chocolates, other extra,s including a bottle of wine.
I asked if breakfast was included and was told no as i had booked room only.
Later i asked if the upgraded room comes with complimentry breakfast and the receptionist said no, but as i was a platinum member she would add it to the room.
The only downside is that i am typing this with there £15.99 a night internet rate, annoyingly after booking it to the room i looked in my wireless connections list and there is one called Public Free WIFI so i may have pay,d for nothing.
I,ll try the connection later.
E-mailed ahead for my stay last night at the HI Doncaster A1(M) jct.36
No upgrade
Next challenge tommorow night i have a family room booked at HI Norwich north then a double room on Sat.
Lets see if the family room fails have any sort of upgrade as usual.
As i said in my last post i was staying at HI Norwich North,I booked a 2 night bed/breakfast/dinner in a family foom for 2 adults and a child (for only £67.00 a night, booked on their own web site and not the holiday inn main site).
Sorry to distract from my own topic but wasn,t there another thread which stated you come get better deals from the hotels own web site rather than the main HI site and i thought the consensus was this wasn,t likely, this hotel certain has different packages on offer.
Anyway back to upgrades, the family room i booked was upgraded in such that we recieved all the extra,s an executive room would have plus two bottles of wine, the next night i had booked a second double room for the rest of my party which was also upgraded to exec and again two bottles of wine.
The recepionist later said if they had not been boked she would have no problem upgrading the family room to one of their suites as she considered that was a fair family room upgrade.
Good for you! What a great couple of days you had.. I wish the hotels in USA were as generous.
I am waiting to see what kind of upgrade I receive, if any, at the CP in Kansas City, MO.
Booked a 3 night stay and two rooms asked for the concierge level. Communicated witht he GM and he told me they are not finished with their renovations quite yet.
The Executive lounge is not done! So I guess there will be no wine for me, but we will see.
Great to hear that you got the two family rooms. I remember from your thread that you were very much concerned about it. Even better, you even got upgraded. Congratulations. Now if you also get the points for this stay, you truly are the hero.
No i didn't manage to get the second family room but luckily a member of our party had to cancel so we only needed a double room on the second night.
This hotel was so helpful, we had only been in the room a few minutes when reception rang to see if the room was ok, they also gave us a load of additional hot chocolate drink sachets for the room and glasses of free milk for my daughter.
The carvery we had they gave us a mix of the different meats and for the childs meal there was a choice of childrens food but they also gave my daughter slices of roast turkey as this was not on the childrens menu.
At the same time as we had this quite high level of attention there was also going on a wedding, a ladies luncheon and a tribute band/dinner evening so it wasn,t that the hotel was slack.
Seems like Norwich HI is top notch
We are Just Back from the London Intercontinental as we took the In-laws for a week end in London. Booked one room on points and one classic including breakfast our room was upgraded to a full suite, lounge are, dining area, work area, large Bedroom, and full bathroom with six piece suite. Other room, on points, also upgraded to deluxe. We used our weekend voucher for second night on our suite but offered complimentary breakfast for that night. Mini bar replenished regularly, RA benefit. It was Excellent Value and with first class service.
Best upgrade I ever had was at the InterContinental in Malta. Booked a club room and got upgraded to the Presidential Suite. Superb, massive balcony, kitchen and living area. There was a piano! A piano people....
October, 2009; using the "buy two and stay free" promotion, at the Intercontinental Doha. While redeeming the award online, I was only offered a city view, which was fine since it was free. When I got to the hotel, I was advised I had been upgraded to ocean view on the club level and that my check-in process would take place in the room rather than at the desk. Can you say accommodating?
I have stayed 87 nights so far this year and should top 100 before year end.
Upgrades come more often now.![]()
Loads of points I guess, Suggest you look at Ambassador again and pay by points?
This is the sort of Email I like to get, having requested an upgrade. Also booked the least expensive room that now is half the going rate. I guess it
helps to be a proffesional holiday maker.
"

Great letter, Ronald! Thought I'd share a recent one I received as well:
Hello Iris,
I am sorry you had a difficult time making your reservations and there nowshould be a confirmation letter in your in-box unless your computer tookit as spam.(If you did not get it just send me an email to this address and Iwill email it as an attachment from one of our other computer systems.
I booked you a very nice king suite and it required no additional points(award stays are 15,000 points per night here).
In our system regardless of our occupancy there is a limit on awards nights it will allow to sell and that limit had been reached on August 8Th even though I still have 50 or so rooms left and you must have talked with one of my new employees who does not understand what I am explaining to you at this time so I am going to talk with my new help to insure this does not happen again.
Anyway when the limit is reached people at 1800-holiday or at priority club cannot book stays either which is why the problem you were having got directed to me.
I am at the hotel and can and have overridden the system to book your stay.
Again I am sorry you went through this I hate to find out that I have a training issue in this manner but now that I know I promise you it will be fixed.
Best Regards
Sam Israel
iristina,
Thanks for the sharing the letter from Sam. I think it's pretty positive and well-written!! : ) I'm glad to see he apologized..that's always important.
Amanda
Well it was entertaining. Have I not seen somewhere that there are no black out dates?
I believe you are correct, Ronald. At least that's what I thought too. And, the employee I spoke with at the PCR center did not understand why the booking would not go through. I was happy the hotel took care of it, and up-graded me to a suite when I was using points! :-)
That can not be bad, can it ?
Partly depends of the country, in the USA it was very common to be offered an upgrade and in some cases some extra goodies. In France it was a bit hit and miss and often had to be requested, In Switzerland we were in a HIE and got a lot of goddies as there was only one class of room. In New Zealand and Australia we got one every time although we had to complain at one hotel before an upgrade was offered. In Germany it was about 3 out of 4. In the UK its a bit hit and miss.
I have never been offered an upgrade
Could I ask what do you do to try to get one?
Well, after contacting my Crowne Plaza in London (shoreditch) a few weeks before my stay, booking with
my points and clearly stating my gold (soon to be platinum) status I was offered no upgrade...although I did get a voucher for a bottle of wine if I eat in there. ![]()
Its a few years ago that I stayed at the CP in Londond, but I did get an upgrade without asking.
Hi,
I got a great upgrade to a junior suite at the Holiday Inn Bangkok a couple of weeks ago and in the UK Holiday Solihull are very good at providing upgrades to executive rooms. Around the corner at the Holiday Inn Birmingham airport, I almost never get an upgrade even when the hotel is half empty. I am finding that it is less hit and miss and more dependent on the hotel management.
to be honest, what I am reading is fairly comon.
In Asia, I get great service and reminded upon arriving that I am a values "PC" member. In Europe..I am often treated with indifference, and I have stopped asking for an upgrade at check in in some locations...due to the looks I get. Why cant it automatic according to the computer system so rude counter clerks don't have to give ma snarl when I do ask?
I will say the CP in New Delhi a few years ago was top notch and treated me like a king...no room upgrade, but I was given lounge access every morning and night complimentary...as a gold member.
In the states and in the Caribbean...my experiences have been mixed as well...but predominately.at the smaller hotels, I have been offered the upgrades more often.
All in all...the rewards are fairly good, but the people is what makes it not so good.
I've never been offered a room upgrade but have also never asked for one. I am only a Gold member of farily recent date. I shall perhaps be a little more pro-active in future, in asking what sort of room I have - can't hurt. Haven't noticed any different treatment in passing from silver to gold. I think room key is meant to be ready but haven't noticed this. At my level, an occasional upgrade would be a nice bonus but can't really be demanded.
As a Gold member I am not sure that you do get upgrades but Platinum does.See the bogs to see how to be sure of getting the best room for your needs.
As I say Ronald, an upgrade would be a nice surprise but at Gold Level there is no entitlement. Still, asking what type of room I have been given can't do any harm I guess.
Well as the Contessaa says "If you do not ask then you do not get"
Very rarely, maybe
once every 20 stays.
What is your level and what do you do to increase the chances?
Hi,
I've been a Platinum member for 5 years and have only ever received an ugrade once, in Edinburgh.
I stay in hotels for around 6 months of the year through work commitments, probably around 70% of these are IHG,
so taking a rough count that's around 500 nights over 5 years and I've been ugraded once!
I used to ask for the free upgrade, but most hotels, especially in the southern part of England, make you feel like
you're asking for something that is too much hassle for them to do.
I'd say that as a whole the Priority Club program has gone downhill over the last 12-18 months with hotels not passing
points onto the guest memberships, meaning discrepancies are regularly sent.
Damien.
I find this hard to believe that they are ignoring your status or have they not been informed of until you arrive please look at my blog this may well
help as it has others.
In the mean time welcome to the forum and I hope that you do now get the benefits befitting your loyalty to IHG.
Very interesting to read your blogs Ronald - very informative. Thanks for your replies today.
