Platinum Plus?

I made Platinum status back in February, and feel that it would be nice to have an additional level to achieve, or additional incentives to encourage Platinums to reach higher status, your thoughts?

Favorite IHG Properties:

*Pocatello, ID Holiday Inn

*The round Holiday Inn at Long Beach, CA Airport (room overlooking runways)

Re: Platinum Plus?

Have you considered Ambassador : it has an initial charge of $150.00 and an annual charge of $100.

You get 5000 points for signing up but more importantly a voucher for a free weekend night when you book the first night of the week end  at an Intercontinental.you will see the terms etc on the web, This voucher is worth a considerable sum of money and you get the upgrades. There are other benefits too.Have a look.

Re: Platinum Plus?

I agree, Ambassador is well worth the upgrade, plus once you become a member, you can use your points to renew your status.

My favorite part is the late check out.

Scotto,

Would you be willing to trade in points to obtain Ambassador status? New members can trade-in 24,000 points to become an Ambassador member.

It's great traveling due to business and being able to reap the rewards!!!

Re: Platinum Plus?

Scotto!

Just for future reference, try visiting www.priorityclub.com/ambassador

The easier ambassador website was recently launched to include easier navigation & a FAQ page.

New members cost is $150 USD or 24,000 points. The annual requalification to remain an Ambassador currently stands at $100 USD. It is not required to renew once first joining. Ambassador status is not earned through stays, it is an extra privelege one pays for. Once joining, one will receive a new card and maintain he or she's current level. Scotto, if you are currently a Platinum Elite member, than you will receive your Platinum level benefits at Holiday Inns, Crowne Plaza's, etc and receive Ambassador benefits at InterContinental Hotels ONLY.

Ambassador membership benefits travelers who tend to stay at InterContinental Hotels now or in the future. It will not be a cost benefit if you are a traveler who tends to stay in Holiday Inns or other IHG properties.

I only recommending using points to pay for the membership if you are willing to call the Ambassador number, 1-800-462-6686.

Points will be deducted immediately once becoming an Ambassador member. Re-log in to your account to see points used. Below is what my account page looked like after redeeming my points for renewal. Hope this helps.

Re: Platinum Plus?

Scotto,

Amanda post below gives you a lot to ponder on. In your position I would sign up to get your RA status for which there is no charge.  As you indicate your number of nights, this would be easy however you would need to include three different intercontinental hotels per membership year. Now as you get the free week end night in which you need one paid night  you could be a third of the way there. I  somehow think you are located in The USA so there are many fine choices for IC hotels. Any way good luck.

Re: Platinum Plus?

Scotto,

Renewal  for Ambassador  status is a no brainer.  It cost $100, but you get the voucher for a weekend night and 5,000 Priority poiints.

At an IC you will get an upgrade to a better room.  Sometimes it will be a suite; other times you will wonder if it really is  an upgrade.  The management will send up a welcome gift which might fruit, and bottled water, though some will also send up chocolates, cookies or wine. You also will cet a free moviie of TV from that group that you normally would pay a fee for.

I am a "leisure" traveler so I am not clocking in as many   nights on the road as  business travelers. Yet the Ambassador program has been a very good deal for me, and I renewed again for the third year.

Welcome aboard.

I agree with what you're saying scotto, but can anyone tell me if RA is worth it if one cannot stay at an intercontinental hotel? I as well travel for work but they will not spring for the bill. So my choices are hi, hi express, candlewood, staybridge and crowne plaza. I've look to see if RA would still help in my situation, but no luck on finding anything.

Re: Platinum Plus?

Hi

Having been an Ambassador for a year and a Platinum PC Member for longer than I care to remember, it should be made clear to the OP that the Ambassador status will only be recognised at Intercontinental Hotels and an no other brand in the chain. So if you are hoping for higher status at CP,HI, HIX etc. then don't waste your points - you are at the Pinnacle of the lower levels of the brand !

Hope that helps

Re: Platinum Plus?

I had considered upgrading but since most of the areas I travel for business are NOT large cities with IC, I don't see the use. I do agree that they need a higher level for Platinum. It irks me when I am not recognized as Platinum - you would think these hotels would WANT me to spend several weeks with them.

I agree Scott.  I am almost a Platnimum member, only a few hundred points away.  and i also wish there was something more after that we can strive for without paying for ambassador status or using our points.  i think that is a rather stupid idea to use your own money or points to achieve a status change.

Re: Platinum Plus?

Christina,

Those of us that are Ambassador members feel it is well worth the cost because we travel extensively, internationally, etc and enjoy the recognition and benefits that comes with the program. Because Ambassador privilages apply to stays at InterContinental hotels, you will often find many Ambassador members staying in an InterContinental.

Hope that clarifies..

Re: Platinum Plus?

Scotto Hi

I totally agree , this is a thought that has been in my mind for ages, last year I stayed approx 140 ish nights within the UK at ICH {mainly Holiday Inns} and so far this year only 70!!!!!

And according to my Xmas card from ICH because of my number of stays I am within the top 5% worldwide of priority club members guests {which in another thread advises there are over 45 million members!!!!!} and I get no different treatment than Mr X who stays only 40 times a year so just getting platinum........

My thought process was a black card for over 70 or 80 days a year and get a little better treatment or extras......is that too much to ask for a frequent guest????? I don't see why I should be paying to join the ambassador program, although I understand some of the perks????

Re: Platinum Plus?

When we have stays exceeding 100PA I just do not understand the reluctance to take Ambassador. Yes it costs $150 to sign up but so do all the other premium cards. but look at what you get back. A weekend free night voucher  than can be worth many 100's$$, points voucher and with stays of 100 nights almost guaranteed RA status which is free. Those who say they do not stay at IC's to get their RA status why not give them a go as a treet for your nearest and dearest. It seems that the Europeans are much more  likely to go for this and it is perplexing me.

I must admit I don't really stay or IC's and in the blurb on the scheme it advises that there is no guarentee for anything at other hotels for example HI's......I do see that you can get RA for 24,000 points, I presume, unless you stay at IC you can't earn points???? Unless I have misread your comments you say that with over 100+ nights RA status would almost be guarenteed free, I couldn't see anything with reference this????

Re: Platinum Plus?

Hi Stanley,

I need to clarify:_

Yes you can spend points 24000 to get Ambassador, Royal Ambassador can then be earned by Ambaassodors on a number of nights putting them into the top 1% of ambassador membership, provided that at least 3 of those nights are in three different IC hotels. You will also have reached Platinum plus by haveing achieved 60,000 points, so all those benefits would apply.

Re: Platinum Plus?

The question comes to mind, how did you achieve Platinum status that early. Can't be on nights, so it is on points. As most of us did, using all the promos and bonuses available to us.

I'm in the same boat as you and have achieved status fairly early the last several years, but I don't see any benefit in having a Platinum Plus level added to the PC structure. If most of the hotels do not recognize our Platinum level, why would they recognize a higher level. The HG policies in that respect should be more strict to the hotels and give the Gold and Platinum members benefits or upgrades that a regular guest does not receive.

Why do I stay at IHG hotels? I love the generosity of PC providing us with promos to get more points than any other hotel program does do. And the various possibilities to redeem points.

The Ambassador / Royal Ambassador level is only valuable if you stay often at IC hotels. My company won't allow me to stay at this type of hotels, so the stays I do make at ICs come out of my pocket. I like the benefits that I do receive as a RA at ICs and know that I will get them.

If PC would force their hotels to give benefits to their top tier members the platinum status would be more valued by us. So let's hope that PC will do something in that respect.

Re: Platinum Plus?

JBa what a very excellent post. Achieving platinum is for me quite quick using the tools available. You mentioned the recognition aspect of Platinum in Hotels and there were numerous comments on the previous forum a number of us where involved with and the exchange resulted in IHG looking at "consistency" It seemed to be in the first stage IC hotels only and RA  do now seem to get recognition  of right. We always Email the hotels prior to arriving to state my level and [preferences, a non reply gets a follow up. I now use a template to save time. I include bed type, room position away from the lifts etc.

I believe that those who have  a significant number of nights should consider Ambassador as it really does pay for itself if you enjoy a bit of luxury by paying for IC s for special family treats.

Re: Platinum Plus?

PCR Platinum level is achieved immediately after purchase of Ambassador Membership.  Besides the aforementioned benefits, achieving Platinum level at the start of the year has value to me in order to immediately access the 50% bonus PCR points earning structure.

When Ambassadors stay 75 nights per year in any IHG hotel, they reap appreciable more points because Platinum status PCR (50%) bonus was applied for all 75 nights, not just the last 15 ("60" is the initial Platinum threshold based on nights alone according to the PCR membership terms).

Ambassador membership may be designed for well-traveled travelers staying at the InterContinental Hotels, but additional (50% more) bonus points is an appreciable benefit that adds up quickly to my PCR points balance.

*******

Correction:  Ambassador Membership gives immediate access to Gold Level, not Platinum.

Re: Platinum Plus?

Please let me know where you get your knowledge from.

Looking at the PC web site it states the following:

Intercontinental Ambassador is more than a club. It's a status. It delivers exclusive privileges. It opens doors.

It sets you apart.

Valid at over 140 Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts worldwide, Ambassador status also automatically elevates you to Gold Elite level of Priority Club Rewards. So every  time you stay ............

It does not state anywhere that you automatically will be Platinum, but you will be Gold. That is mine and a lot of other frequent travelers experience. Now once you become Royal Ambassador you also have Platinum status with Priority Club. RA cannot be bought and is by invitation only. You might find a friend who has a RA certificate and if he gifts it to you, you can purchase RA status. IHG becomes more selective with these certificates and I hear that the gifted RAs do not receive the certificates in their welcome package.

Re: Platinum Plus?

Hello

I to am struggling to understand all the advantages of the ambassador status in regard to the other hotel types in the chain.

When on business I mainly stay in Holiday Inns etc (due to locations) but when on vacation I prefer Intercontinentals.

My question is - would the bonus points (I think I read somewhere you get a 20,000 points bonus every 15 nights?) for ambassador status be earned at Holiday Inns or do these only apply at Intercontinentals?

Thanks

First wanted just to say Hi as I am new here, and do hope to benefit from your wealth of info and

experience.

I have been Gold status for the last 5-6 years, but since I have also stayed during my business travels with Hilton and Marriot have not excelled beyond 40K points / calendar year.

Next year I am going to do most of my stayes with IHG (average of 70 - 80 nights) , and wanted to know if  can buy my way to Platinum status by the end of 2009 so I can enjoy the benefits of elite status for 2010, I currenty have 33K points and with my next 2 stays should have around 42K. If I purchase 18K points will I get the desired Platinum status?

I thank you and welcome any advice.

As you are estimating 4,500 Points per stay I am assuming you have not signed up for the many Promo's there are available as I'm averaging 7,400+?

If you could eek out an extra stay you could for example sign up for Promo 1558 which gets you a bonus of 5,000 Points.

I reckon if you sign up for everything now and stay 3 nights before New Year you could just about make 60,000 and Platinum, or at least only have to buy a few Points instead of 18.000.

I'm still working through the descriptions for my Promo Code list but here is the list as it stands and I hope you find it useful.

Thanks for the list, bloobell. As most of these codes are fairly old I already have used these promos back in 2008 and beginning of this year. Be advised that most of the codes you can use only once. Also, all these codes are extensivly discussed over at flyertalk. But it's a great list for someone who just starts with PC or never has done promos.

I know but the list is pretty extensive and I've pulled it together from a variety of threads in different places and also sorted it numerically for ease of use.

Even if 10% of them re-work every 3-6 months it will be worthwhile as it only takes half an hour to try them all out.

I've never purchased a Platinum level, but a brief check on the PC Club site shows that for gold elite it's only good for the calender year it is purchased.  Make sure it's not the same with Platinum, it would be a shame if you bought it and it only lasted a couple weeks.

Re: Platinum Plus?

No only reason why you want to purchase points to reach platinum level would be for the 50% bonus points. Status benefits in hotels are sporadic, but I have to say that i've been upgraded quite frequently the last several months, mostly to suites. Anyway, if you use the promos that bloobell so nicely put on a spreadsheet you should average with over 5000 points per stay and have platinum status after 12 nights.

And yes, status on PC is from January 1 until December 31.
